Cory Michael Smith Cast as Edward Nygma

“I am an actor who can transform the film with the final cut. Who am I?”

Gotham has its Nygma, its Edward Nygma!

Cory Michael Smith has been confirmed to play Edward Nygma (aka the Riddler) in the Fox TV series Gotham. We are looking forward to what types of riddles, puzzles, rhymes, conundrums and brainteasers he may unleash on the city of Gotham and hope he becomes a season or series regular on the TV show.

On-set Pictures of Montoya and Crispus Allen

Update 12/05/2014:

Renee Montoya (Victoria Cartagena) and Cripus Allen (Andrew Stewart-Jones) have been confirmed as series regulars for Gotham Season 1. This decision brings the show even closer to Gotham Central which, if you’ve been following our review podcasts, makes us both really happy.

Original Story 02/04/2014:

New on-set images of Ben McKenzie as Jim Gordon during filming in Manhattan are captured.

With Jim Gordon are fellow Gotham P.D. detectives Renee Montoya and Crispus Allen, played by Victoria Cartagena and Andrew Stewart-Jones. Both  Montoya and Allen feature in the Ed Brubacker and Greg Rucka comic series “Gotham Central” that recently showed up on a tweet by Ben Mckenzie. The first 10 issues of “Gotham Central” will be reviewed in our next podcast in two weeks time.

In these shots, on the steps of what appears to be G.C.P.D. headquarters with all the uniformed police in the shots, it seems like Montoya and Jim are squaring up to one another until finally Allen steps in to calm the situation. What is the heated exchange about? Are accusations flying? Why does Crispus Allen step in? We can’t wait to find out!

“Batman Year One” – Zero Year E03

Show Notes

Derek and John return for Zero Year, Episode 3 with a full spoiler filled Batman Year One review.

News

It was a big week this week with the release of the officIal photos for the majority of the main cast of characters of the Gotham TV show. We discuss our impressions of the look of the actors and what we think this means for the show. We also discuss some connected news from the wider DC universe.

As DC move the release date of the untitled Superman – Batman to the same day as Captain America 3 – May 6th 2016 – the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier ignite a brand new Marvel Vs DC fight. You can watch the interview here.

The majority of the episode is given over to our review of the animated movie Batman Year One.

Starring Ben McKenzie as Bruce Wayne and Brian Cranston as Jim Gordon, this animated film brings to life the seminal 1986 Frank Miller graphic novel. As we discover why Jim Gordon comes to the Gotham City Police Department and how Bruce Wayne takes his first steps to clean up Gotham. Both protagonists meet the corruption in Gotham head-on leading ultimately to the emergence of the partnership between Jim Gordan and the Batman.

The review is full of spoilers so if you haven’t read the graphic novel or watched the movie, grab a copy from your local comic book shop or you can read it digitally at Comixology and join us.

Let us know your opinion on the story, graphic novel or movie and we’ll discuss any feedback on the next episode.

New On-Set Images of the Wayne Family and Selina

The young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and is parents have finally been revealed in some new on-set images, via hitflix.com and starburstmagazine.com.

What we can say from the photos is that David Mazouz looks like he is having a blast, he can be seem smiling from ear-to-ear with his on-screen parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne (played by Grayson McCouch and Brette Taylor), and the future Catwoman (Camren Bicondova). Why wouldn’t he have a grin on his face, he’s the future Batman! Some of the other images captured during filming show the tragic beginning of the young Bruce Wayne’s emotional journey that leads ultimately to the creation of the Dark Knight.

We were also treated to some new action shots of the young Selina Kyle sliding down a fire escape. Is she trying to escape from someone or is she rushing to get somewhere? We think the answer has something to do with the carton of cream tucked away in her jacket, as it appears it is feeding time for the local alley cat or cats. These are such a great collection of images and really cements the young Selina Kyle to her future persona – Catwoman.

catwoman-gotham1-c20f0 catwoman-gotham2-b761d Camren Bicondova who plays Selina Kyle was pictured on her Catwoman costume on the set of the 'Gotham' Tv series in Downtown, Manhattan, New York City Camren Bicondova who plays Selina Kyle was pictured on her Catwoman costume on the set of the 'Gotham' Tv series in Downtown, Manhattan, New York City

The tone of the show is looking very stylised and brooding, with its mix of prohibition era costumes and present day setting. We can’t wait to see the more of the cast, especially Fish Mooney and maybe some unannounced villains.

Arkham Knight – The Villains

Gotham fans, Batman fans we are being indulged…not that we’re complaining…

From the shadows of Gotham a few of Batman’s villains were teased out by RockSteady in the awesome trailer for Arkham Knight. These images gave a hint of the villainy and scum that Batman will need to face in RockSteady’s forthcoming game this Autumn.

On the back of the trailer some very atmospheric and exciting pictures have been released of three of Batman’s dark acquaintances, via Gameinformer.com – The Riddler (Edward Nygma), The Penguin (Oswald Cobblepot) and Two-Face (Harvey Dent).

twoface0314-610 - cropped

penguin0314-610 - cropped

Of course we’re interested to see how all of these characters play-out in the game. But we are really intrigued to see how the portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot compares with the new, younger character exploration by Robin Lord Taylor in the the TV series Gotham. Also, the ever present Riddler from the other games (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Arkham Origins) finally looks set to get a full in-game story. We really want to see what they do with this great Batman adversary.

Watch this space as we are expecting to see further rogues, like Harley Quinn and The Scarecrow, who will feature in Arkham Knight.

What are your thoughts on these new pictures? Let us know and share your thoughts below.

New Images for the TV Series Gotham

Very exciting first look images of the new Jim Gordon (Ben Mckenzie) in action whilst filming for the new Fox TV show Gotham were posted by comicbookmovie.com. The pictures show the young Jim Gordon, revolver in hand, on a chase across Gotham and firing at an unknown adversary. Who was he after? Did he catch him or her? These will become clear when the first season gets up-and-running in Autumn of this year. The pictures revealed that the new Jim Gordon, at least initially, does not have a mustache and he is not wearing his trademark glasses.

In quick succession we got more cool images, this time of Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) on set which were also released via comicbookmovie.com. The criminal Oswald looks dapper and sophisticated with the famous bow tie and we are enjoying the sinister shades that he is wearing. Whilst we don’t see an umbrella in these images, we do see the Gotham Gazette newspaper that may contain spoilers.

If we hadn’t been treated enough to these little snippets from on-set Fox then went and released the first official photo of Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock. With his G.C.P.D. detective badge on display and his gun holstered, he perfectly personifies Gotham and looks every bit the world-weary, hard-edged partner to Jim Gordon. You teach that rookie detective some new tricks.

Another official photo was released by the Gotham Website today, our first look at Camren Bicondova as a young Selina Kyle the future Catwoman. Note the strategically placed Gotham skyline above her head…they sure look like kitty ears!

Catwoman Official

We’re certainly looking forward to more images from the show and we’ll post them here as soon as we find them. We can’t wait to see official photos of Jim Gordan and Oswald Cobblepot and how Fish Mooney and Alfred Pennyworth are going to turn out for Gotham.

What do you think of the released images. Share your thoughts on the images in the comments section below.

“Cast and Characters” – Zero Year E02

Show Notes

Derek and John return for Zero Year, Episode 2. This time we have a much longer episode that focuses on all the details about the announced cast and characters so far and introduces for the first time the “News” section of the podcast .

News

We begin this week discussing some of the news that has come out since the last episode.

  • At the 2014 Winter Television Critics Association press tour the Chairman of Fox Entertainment has given his description of what we can expect from Gotham with an interesting take of “Gotham teetering on the Edge”.
  • Rocksteady have announced the forth and “Final” game in the Arkham series due out in 2014 on PS4, PC and XboxOne. This is the third game in the series created by Rocksteady and will see a significant upgrade from the previous incarnations. For the first time in this series you’ll be able to actually drive the Batmobile giving you the chance to “Be The Batman” even more than ever before. See the announcement trailer “Father to Son” here:
  • Grant Wilfley Casting has put out a call for extras for the Gotham TV show in New York. Confirming our theory on the filming location for the show. Following Marvels announcement that their four Netflix TV shows will also be filmed in New York we think this confirms New Yorks’ position as Superhero capital of America.
  • We also discuss some casting and news for two other DC properties. Since we recorded the podcast the first full image of The Flash’s costume was released this week and there’s lots of casting for the pilot of Constantine.

Next time on Gotham TV Podcast we’ll be doing our first review show. Derek and John will be discussing their thoughts on the original Batman Year One comic by Frank Miller and the 2011 animated movie adaptation of the same name. This adaptation stars Ben McKenzie as Bruce Wayne/Batman and will hopefully serve as a great introduction to a younger cast of Characters from the Gotham Universe. Expect the episode towards the end of March.

Show Notes

The announcement by Fox Networks of an up-and-coming TV series based around the City of Gotham in the DC Batman Universe was received with excitement and interest by fans of the DC Universe and all things Batman including us.

Based around characters established by Bob Kane and developed by Bill Finger the TV show is set to follow the origin of the young Jim Gordon in the Gotham City P.D. and explore the origin stories of the villans that have made Gotham infamous.

With the show set to be produced by Warner Bros Television and currently in pre-production with Director/Executive Producer – Danny Cannon – and Writer – Bruno Heller – established to guide and develop the Gotham series in its first season.

In this Gotham TV Podcast episode Derek and John discuss our early impressions and thoughts on how this show may develop and pose some questions about the show, such as: How will Gotham function without Batman?

Some major cast announcements have already been made and include Ben McKenzie as the young Jim Gordon, Jada Pinkett-Smith as a new crime boss Fish Mooney, Sean Pertwee as Alfred and Robin Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot (aka the Penguin). These casting choices will be further explored in our next podcast.
