“Batman Begins Review” – Zero Year Episode 7

Show Notes

Derek and John return for Zero Year, Episode 7 of Gotham TV Podcast, with a full and detailed discussion of Batman Begins, the first installment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Trilogy. Starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman and set against the backdrop of an organised menace with plans for the City of Gotham; Batman Begins looks at the origins of Batman and the reasons why Bruce Wayne takes up the mantle of Batman to defend Gotham and his family’s legacy. This our most detailed discussion yet for one of the most influential Superhero franchise films of all time.

News

We begin by discussing some of the news that has come out since the last episode and discuss some of the great feedback and comments we have received from you wonderful listeners this week.

⦁ From Zack Snyder’s Twitter feed we saw our first official image of Batman V Superman : Dawn of Justice in the form of Ben Affleck as Batman with the Bat-mobile was released. The new Batman really looks like Frank Millers version of the Dark Knight in the Dark Knight Returns Graphic Novel and we talk ALL about it.
⦁ With confirmation of the Gotham TV Series Pick up and broadcast day a full cast photo was also released. The Gotham TV show will air on Mondays at 8pm on Fox in the USA, We also have confirmation of at least 16 episodes for Season One of Gotham with rumours of up to 22 episodes.
⦁ We also received excellent news that Victoria Cartagena as Renee Montoya, Cory-Michael Smith as Edward Nygma and Anthony Stewart Jones as Crispus Allen will be series regulars for Season one. If you’ve heard our Gotham Central reviews you know how delighted we are about Renee and Crispus being added to the regular cast and Edward Nygma is one of the most interesting characters in the DC universe.
⦁ In the Gotham TV series “First Look” Bruno Heller, Danny Cannon and member s of the cast provide insights in to the show and state “You won’t want to miss an episode because it might be the introduction to the Joker”. “We may show you why the Scarecrow becomes the Scarecrow”. We also discuss the Entertainment Weekly interview by James Hibberd with Gotham show runner Bruno Heller.
⦁ Another DC property Constantine also got a season pick up last week. Read John’s review of the Constantine Trailer  here –  it will be shown on Fridays at 10PM after Grimm on NBC in the U.S.
⦁ From the makers of Arrow the CW Network have released a trailer for the Flash TV show it will be shown on Tuesday at 8PM as a lead in to Supernatural. Arrow will stay on the CW at 8PM on Wednesday nights.

Thanks so much for listening. This show is for you so let us know what you think.

Next time we’ll explore the second film of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy – The Dark Knight – in a few weeks time.

Batman V Superman has an official title

The Batman V Superman twitter account released a new logo for the highly anticipated superhero movie today. They also revealed to the world that the previously unnamed movie has been titled Dawn of Justice.

So what can we tell from these three little words. We’re only speculating but after a huge amount of criticism of Superman’s actions at the end of Man of Steel is Bruce Wayne in Metropolis to show Kal-El the true meaning of Justice? This would make a battle between Batman and Superman inevitable wouldn’t it?

The official Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice website has also been launched today

Only 100 weeks left to wait.

Meanwhile feast your eyes on the new logo. There’s a lot of darkness overtaking the Superman symbol which, as we learned in Man of Steel, means hope. Does this mean that Clark is losing hope in the human race?

We can’t wait to see how these two behemoths go head to head on the big screen for the first time on 6th of May 2016.

For good measure and in anticipation of the film here are the photo’s again of Ben Affleck’s sad Batman with his Batmobile that Zack Snyder released last week via his twitter account.

Fox Upfronts – Gotham Insights

With the teaser and extended trailers released in the last few weeks some further information came from the producers of Fox’s Gotham TV series with the “Inside Look” that was created for the Fox Upfronts last week. There are some great interviews and insights into what we are likely to see in the Gotham TV Show this fall.

Bruno Heller certainly teases us about villains to come with snippets such as “What made the Joker, the Joker?” and “How did the Scarecrow become the Scarecrow?”. The director, Danny Cannon, also gives us a nice perspective about the show adding “Why did the City get in to such a state that it needed a vigilante?”. There is much of what we saw in the trailer but there are also some nice viewpoints from the cast, a bit of new footage and we hope you enjoy this additional glimpse in to GOTHAM.

Dublin Comic Con

Dublin Comic Con (DCC) 2014 is returning on 9th and 10th August at the National Show Centre in Swords. A current list of guests attending is available here with more to be added shortly.

We’re really looking forward to the event, in particular for fans of Gotham and the wider Batman and DC universe the Batman himself is attending! Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman, will attend during the weekend. It is difficult to express the level of involvement and influence that Kevin Conroy has had over the last 14 years or more voicing Batman. He is much beloved by fans of the many classic animated Batman features and series and of course the Rocksteady Arkham games that he has been involved in. To name a few Kevin Conroy has been in such classics as Batman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.

Tickets are now on sale online and can be purchased here. The VIP tickets seem to sold out already. Other than the ‘General entry’ tickets, there are also “Family entry” and “Weekend entry” tickets available to buy online and it is free entry to children 3 years of age or under.

New Cast of Gotham Photo – Secrets Revealed

Earlier today a brand new Gotham cast photo was released by Ben McKenzie via Twitter showing all the main characters of the upcoming TV series scheduled for Autumn this year.

What a great photo it is with the G.C.P.D. partnership of Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock front and centre of the shot. Either side are the two other main partnerships of the series to the right the young Bruce Wayne and his loyal and trusted butler Alfred Pennyworth and to the left the more dubious and villainous pairing of Fish Mooney and Oswald Cobblepot. Peering from above the alleyway is the agile Selina Kyle looking ready to pounce. Whilst towards the back of the picture are an awkward looking Edward Nygma and a young Ivy with what appears to be a rose in hand. All-in-all a great set of characters and cast in this photo and we can’t wait to see them come to life in the TV show.

We also took a deeper look at the image and found a few hidden elements in the picture that we’ve highlighted in the annotated version of the picture below. These little extras in the picture sign-post what some of these characters will obviously become and maybe (just maybe) gives a whisper of another character for the show. Check out our thoughts below.

Gotham Cast Photo annotated 2

1. The Penguin – The poster fixed to the wall above Oswald Cobblepot contains a rotund penguin. Is the Penguin in the poster eating a Fish?

2. The Cat –  The nimble and agile alley cat slinking in the background always lands on all four paws…a sign of the future Catwoman.

3. The Riddler ? –  Graffiti, graffiti everywhere down this seedy alley way but one piece of graffiti poses a question…is the Riddler alive and well and operating in Gotham?

4. The Poison Ivy –  Directly above Ivy Pepper the tendrils of ivy creep up the buildings, beginning to spread, and taking the first footholds ready to consume Gotham…in this kid there is the warning of Poison Ivy.

5. Calling Cards – @SuperheroReport on Twitter pointed out these playing cards and the connection to a certain Batman character. Now maybe they are or maybe they aren’t, but does this sign show the calling card of a familiar character or is it just a joke?

Finally, the arrow which points at the cheeky spotlight in the background of the photo and which could just be the Bat Signal, hinting at what the young Bruce Wayne is destined to become.

The Official GOTHAM Trailer

Before Batman…there was GOTHAM.

The first look of the now confirmed TV series Gotham came via the release of the first official teaser and extended trailers last night (5th May 2014) during ’24’.

A moody and intense official trailer gives us a first glimpse in to the chaos and corruption that hangs heavy over the City of Gotham in the aftermath of Thomas and Martha Wayne’s murders. It shows a power battle developing for the dark heart and soul of Gotham with our first official look at Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) and confirms the presence of other notable characters Edward Nygma (Corey Michael Smith) and a young Ivy Pepper (Clare Foley). The Gotham City Police Department portrayed here through Jim Gordon (Ben Mckenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) look to be many shades of grey between black and white with a great little sequence of Jim Gordon “questioning” Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Taylor). The trailer exposes a lovely big melting pot that looks both exciting and enticing.

Roll on Autumn/Fall 2014…we can’t wait for this show.

Gotham Central Review

The full comic series “Gotham Central” looks at the Gotham City Police Department and the difficulties and challenges faced by its detectives at work and on the streets fighting crime in Gotham City. The shadow of the Batman and his foes hang heavy over the officers of the Major Crimes Unit.

In this fifth podcast we review issues 11-18 of the Gotham Central series that include the story arcs “Daydreams and Believers” (issue #11), “Soft Targets” (issues #12-15) and “Life is Full of Disappointments” (issues #16-18). From the hiring of a temp in the Major Crimes Unit to the beginnings of a new case the series charts the relationships of the detectives in the G.C.P.D. and the events that impact on them. With a well-known villain on the loose in Gotham the detectives are truly on the front line of the war on crime. The review is full of spoilers so if you haven’t read the comics, grab a copy from your local comic book shop or you can read it digitally at Comixology and join us. Let us know your opinion on the stories of these arcs or your thoughts of the 40 issue comic series so far. We’ll discuss any feedback on the next episode.

As always thanks for listening. Next time we will be taking a brief break from the review of Gotham Central comic series and will be talking about the first of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy “Batman Begins”. Get watching and we’ll talk to you in two weeks.

“Batman: Strange Days” – Bruce Timm’s Batman 75 Tribute

Bruce Timm, the maker of the much beloved “Batman: The Animated Series” and the animated features “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” and “Batman: Return of the Joker”, has released his animated short “Strange Days” created for Batman’s 75th anniversary. The 3 minute animated short is available to view here.

“Strange Days” sees the Batman (voiced by Kevin Conroy) take on an old nemesis, Hugo Strange, and his “creation” to rescue the dame. At WonderCon Bruce Timm said when introducing the short that “I always wanted to do a straight-up period piece version of Batman set right in 1939, the year Batman was created.”

The entire short feels like the start of an old black-and-white horror film in its tone, much like the Frankenstein movies. Even the music is evocative of this 1930’s era in which Batman took his first steps to fighting crime in Gotham City.

Bruce Timm also said at WonderCon that “Strange Days is an itch that I’ve had for years that I finally got to scratch.” We are really glad he did as this is a lovely atmospheric piece of animation in tribute to The Bat.

Darwyn Cooke’s Batman 75 Tribute

Hot on the heels of Bruce Timm’s Batman animated short “Strange Days” which we discussed in our most recent podcast. Darwyn Cooke (Batman Beyond Animated, Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1-6 Writer and artist.) has released his short tribute to #Batman75. Simply titled “Darwyn Cooke’s Batman Beyond it is available to watch on Yahoo movies now.

The 1 minute clip shows Terry McGinnis and our elder Bruce Wayne of Batman Beyond teaming up against a very recognisable foe. There are some great nods to the many versions of Batman that have existed in animated and live action form over his 75 year history. It really made us want to watch a new animated series.
