Year One Episode 15 – Gotham The Scarecrow – Gotham TV Podcast Episode 40

In our 40th episode of Gotham TV Podcast we discuss Gotham The Scarecrow this is the second part of an arc of Gotham which introduced us to Gerald and Jonathan Crane. The episode aired on Channel 5 in the UK on the 6th of April 2015.

With Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock on the trail of Dr Gerald Crane (Julian Sands), time is running out for him to develop a permanent cure for what he sees as a genetic flaw in the human race, FEAR. By harvesting the organs of his terrified victims Dr. Crane has created a toxin which he will give to his son Jonathan Crane (Charlie Tahan) that may have a lasting impact on the young Gotham citizen. Also in this episode we discover what happened to Fish Mooney when her escape from Gotham was interrupted by kidnappers and the G.C.P.D. finds a replacement for the recently sacked Medical Examiner in the form of Jim Gordon’s new love interest Doctor Leslie Tompkins.

Year One Episode 14 – Gotham The Fearsome Doctor Crane – Gotham TV Podcast Episode 39

This week on Gotham it was time to be very very afraid as we were introduced to the Crane family in Episode 14 of Gotham The Fearsome Doctor Crane which aired in the UK on Monday 30th March 2015.

We also introduce another Doctor from Gotham in the shape of the (former) G.C.P.D. Medical Examiner, as Philip Hernandez who plays Doctor Guerra left a very special message for our listeners. In the message he explains his scenes in the episode and provides some extra little bits that he brought to the character of Doctor Guerra. He also vows to return to exact his revenge on Ed Nygma! You can follow Philip Hernadez on Twitter and check out his website and blog for all those interested in acting and learning the profession.

In this episode of Gotham the G.C.P.D. investigate a series of murders that surround an anonymous support group for people with debilitating phobias. The perpetrator seemingly is extracting their adrenal gland for no obvious reason. As Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock investigate these crimes, Jim is released from his involvement in the investigation of Thomas and Martha Wayne’s murder by the young Bruce Wayne, seemingly frustrated at the lack of progress in the official case. All the while a romantic air falls over the G.C.P.D as Harvey finds his soft centre for the leader of the support group, Ms. Mullens, and Jim’s relationship with Leslie Thompkins evolves through an unexpected dinner date. Meanwhile at the Precinct a professional spat between the Medical Examiner, Dr. Guerra and Ed Nygma leads to the suspension of Ed from the Forensics Unit before he implicates Guerra in the collection of spare body parts from the morgue. Is Guerra Ed Nyma’s (aka The Riddler) first victim? As Jim and Harvey narrow down their list of suspects, they race to an abandoned swimming pool where Mullens is in danger as a Doctor Gerald Crane is revealed as the murderer at large. With his actions are driven by a longing to release him and his son, Jonathon Crane from their debilitating F.E.A.R. We discuss all these top five case points surrounding  Episode 14 of Gotham.

Feedback

We discuss all the feedback that has come in from our listeners on everything from Welcome Back Jim Gordon to our thoughts about whether Gotham should have a time jump. Make sure to send your thoughts to [email protected]

We also give a big shout out to Victoria Cartagena (Detective Renee Montoya on Gotham) who celebrated her birthday on the 31st of March. If you haven’t had the chance you can hear our interviews with Victoria and of course her partner Detective Crispus Allen (played by Andrew Stewart-Jones) at the links below. We want to wish Victoria a great birthday and another great year on Gotham.

The music at the end of this weeks episode is Nouvelle Vague’s cover song of Love will Tear Us Apart (feat. Eloisia) from their self-titled album Nouvelle Vague. This song was playing in the background of the restaurant where Jim Gordon met Leslie Thompkins for what she thought was another date but turned out to be some professional consultation.

Join us again next week as we discuss Episode 15 of Gotham The Scarecrow. We’re excited to see how the beginnings of Jonathon Crane’s fear leads to his journey towards becoming the Scarecrow. Thanks as always for listening.

Gotham News

  • the Dollmaker mentioned in Episode 2 of #Gotham will appear on the show. Colm Feore, who played King Laufey in Thor and also appeared in Amazing Spider-man 2 is making the leap over to DC to take the role. Dollmaker, real name Dr. Francis Dulmacher, has been teased since the second episode of Gotham, in which his creepy henchmen Doug (Frank Whaley) and Patti (Lili Taylor) name him as the culprit behind the mass kidnappings of the city’s street children. We wonder if John’s theory on the Dollmaker will come true.
  • Comicbook.com had the news up on their site

DC Connected News

  • Supergirl has been cast for the upcoming CBS show as Supergirl herself, the young Kara Zor-El. We don’t know much about the show yet but the big question given that CBS are part owners in the CW channel which airs Arrow and The Flash, will Supergirl exist in the same universe as those two shows. Only time will tell. The full story is available over on IGN.com

Gotham News
⦁    Gotham has been officially renewed by Fox in the US for a second season. At the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter event on Saturday 17th January Co-Chairman and CEO of Fox, Dana Walden, said that Fox “love the show” and they’ve told the team behind the hit show “keep doing what you’re doing”. This is great news.
⦁    Other great news revolves around RTE in Ireland who have officially confirmed that Gotham will premiere on RTÉ2 beginning Monday 26th January at 9pm. They’ve even released a brand new trailer. This should hopefully mean a wider audience is reached for the show in Ireland.

⦁    Robin Lord-Taylor fans have been asking one question regularly for months. What do previous actors who play the character think about his performance as the young Oswald Cobblepot on Gotham? Well the answer was given at the TCA’s this weekend when Danny DeVito (there to promote “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia“) was asked about his opinion about Robin Lord-Taylor. He told AccessHollywood.com “I’ve watched the show. I think he’s a very good young Penguin” ,”He’s a terrific actor,”. A ringing endorsement.
⦁    It’s also been announced that the future father of Dick Grayson, John Grayson will be played by Rob Gorrie. The circus will roll into Gotham in Episode 16 carrying with it the Flying Graysons. The episode is titled “The Blind Fortune Teller”. As Gotham takes place during the young years of Bruce Wayne, John Grayson will be a much younger character so we won’t see any appearance of Dick Grayson in the show.

DC Connected News
⦁    Former Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy has dropped out of his second DC movie “Suicide Squad” due to scheduling conflicts. The current movie he’s filming, “The Revenant”, has run over so he’s unable to take on the role of Rick Flag in “Suicide Squad” which starts filming in April 2014.

Thanks for listening we’ll be covering Volume 2 of Hush in our next podcast as Gotham is still on hiatus in Ireland and the UK; returning to Channel 5 for the second half of season one in March.

Gotham Pilot Podcast Year One E01 – Gotham TV Podcast Episode 18

START HERE FOR GOTHAM EPISODE DISCUSSIONS.

Join us for our Gotham Pilot Podcast review

Show Notes

Gotham premiered on Channel 5 in the UK on October 13th at 9PM and on RTÉ2 in Ireland on Monday January 26th 2015 in Ireland and is now available on Netflix and Blu-Ray and DVD. So We’ve finally been able to see the episode and share our thoughts with you. Our episode begins with some Gotham News from back in 2014 when we saw the episode first.

Gotham News

  • We’re not going to talk about ratings much on our show as they generally come out much slower in the UK but ratings for the pilot in the US were pretty high with about 8 million on the night of September 22nd. The audience increased by 50% when DVR watching over the subsequent three days was included. Making the total audience for the show 12 million if out maths is accurate.
  • As we’ve discussed on a past episode Harvey Dent is coming to Gotham and the actor who has been cast to play him is Nicholas D’Agosto. We know him from his turn as one of the ill-fated kids in Final Destination 5. He’s a lot younger than we’ve seen the character on screen before making it very possible that we’ll seen the character on screen before making it very possible that he’s a young lawyer working his way up the ranks of the legal system in Gotham. Hopefully we’ll see a lot of interplay between him and Jim Gordon as they try to clean up the city together.

DC Connected News

  • The Teen Titans joins the expanding list of DC properties being developed as a TV show. Variety reports that TV channel TNT are close to a deal on producing “Titans”, the show would center on Dick Grayson, the former Robin who emerges from Batman’s shadow to become Nightwing and the leader of a fearless band of heroes who include Starfire and Raven. Looks like it might be a show relevant to our interests.

FEEDBACK

We discuss lots of feedback on episode one at the end of the review. If you want to send us your thoughts or suggestions you can send them to our new address [email protected]

“Gotham Central Review Part 4” – Zero Year E13

“Gotham Central Review Part 4” – Zero Year E13

Show Notes

In Zero Year, Episode 13 of Gotham TV Podcast we talk about all the news surrounding Gotham and DC connected universe, in particular, this week the confirmed UK release of Gotham on Channel 5 this Autumn. We also continue our Gotham Central series review looking at issues #23-27 and including the story arcs “Corrigan”, “Lights Out” and “On The Freak Beat” by Ed Brubaker, Greg Rucka and Michael Lark.

The review is full of spoilers so if you haven’t read the comics, grab a copy from your local comic book shop or you can read it digitally at Comixology and join us. Let us know your opinion on the story and we’ll discuss any feedback on the next episode.

Gotham News

⦁    The big news this week is that we finally have a confirmed UK broadcaster for Gotham. Channel 5 a UK channel will be broadcasting the show in the UK. The penetration of the channel is quite low in Ireland but luckily we can at least see it. In Irish broadcast news there’s a vague confirmation that our national broadcaster RTÉ has picked up Gotham and will broadcast it on RTÉ 2. *UPDATE 16/10/2014 – The Irish Independent are reporting that RTÉ 2 have the rights for Gotham and will be showing the TV show from 2015 for those who don’t have access to Channel 5.
⦁    Casting news in this weekend from Gotham is that David Zayas who played Detective Angelo “Angel” Batista throughout the hugely successful TV show Dexter will be swapping to the other side of the law to play Salvatore “The Boss” Maroni. Along with Carmine Falconé and Oswald Cobblepot, Sal is another of the big mobsters of Gotham. Previously he was played by Eric Roberts in Christopher Nolan’s Batman: The Dark Knight and played a very big part in the creation of Two Face in the seminal graphic novel Batman: The Long Halloween.

Other DC News

⦁    DC have planted flags in the sand for movies all the way up to 2020. This provides a little confirmation of the story we reported early from Nikki Finke of the supposedly leaked DC Movie slate but no actual films have been reported in the slots.
⦁    While we still haven’t got confirmation of who’s playing Aquaman, Jason Mamoa, who played Kal Drogo on season 1 of Game of Thrones, has been very strongly rumoured. Pretty interesting casting but another interesting story came out this week about DC commissioning two different writers to write two scripts for an Aquaman movie. So apparently there will be some kind of Aquaman battle Royale to decide which script is the king of the ocean.
⦁    A new Batman comic, Gotham by Midnight, is due to be released in October/November 2014 focusing on the even darker corners of Gotham City and its police force, the GCPD. Written by Ray Fawkes the current writer of “Batman Eternal” and featuring the artwork of “30 Days of Night”  and “Welcome to Hoxford” artist Ben Templesmith. Writer Fawkes says this series is a mix of horror and supernatural and will be largely devoid of the Caped Crusader. Jim Corrigan will also feature in the issues.
⦁    The upcoming Constantine TV Show is starting to stake their claim on some of the wider DC universe characters and confirmed that C.S.U. Officer Jim Corrigan of the Gotham City Police Department will play a big part in the first season of the TV Show. Very interesting and the progress of this story might provide an answer to whether characters from these shows will cross over. If they can work Corrigan into a cross over story with Gotham at some point it opens the door to network agnostic crossovers…. We talk a lot more about Corrigan in this weeks Gotham Central Review.

As always thanks so much for listening and all your interactions over the last five months. We have just over a month left until Gotham launches in the US hopefully it won’t be very long after until we get to see the show in Europe and keep up with the coverage.

Next time we’ll complete our Gotham Central coverage with the final set of issues #28-40, which encompass the collected set “Corrigan II”.
