We’ve been asked by a few of our listeners to share the audio of the Gotham and Constantine Cast interviews we did at New York Comic Con. So in this very special episode we present all nine interviews we did with the co-creator Danny Cannon and cast of Gotham Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Sean Pertwee, Erin Richards and Robin Lord-Taylor. We also share our interviews with the show-runner of NBC’s Constantine David S. Goyer and Matt Ryan who plays John Constantine along with Angélica Celaya newly introduced to Constantine as the character Zed.

While the audio for the interviews isn’t of our usual sound quality we hope you enjoy hearing their thoughts about Gotham and Constantine.

DC Connected News

Constantine premieres in the US on the 24th of October. We’ve seen the pilot of the show twice at NYCC and it’s excellent. Interviews with the cast Matt Ryan and Angélica Selaya and creator David S. Goyer. Reaction from the audience was huge with loads of requests for characters to be added to the show. They’ve already filmed 10 episodes. A UK and Irish broadcaster is yet to be announced so this might mean that we won’t see the show until 2015 but it has a lot of promise.

DC Movie Slate was announced by Warner Brothers up until 2020. One of the big elements to this news was also that the DC movie and TV universes would have no connection.

NYCC Interviews Part 5 with Donal Logue Gotham’s Harvey Bullock – Gotham TV Podcast Exclusive

Exclusive: Here’s our interview with actor Donal Logue, Harvey Bullock on Gotham, who discusses the similarities and differences between Harvey Bullock and other characters he’s played, the impact of Ben McKenzie’s Jim Gordon on his character, the burden of comedic relief and the future broadening scope of Gotham. You can listen to the podcast below with all of our interviews from New York Comic Con or read on for Donal Logue’s interview

Question – From pretty heavy independent films to a pretty heavy character on TV do you feel it’s a natural evolution?

Donal Logue – When you’re younger and you do college theatre or something, I remember we would do something like a Joe Orton play and then you’d rehearse a Sam Shepard play you’d do next and then you’d do the play that night. That’s just being an actor. Especially in the old school. Look at guys like Burgess Meredith and those kinds of careers. Your job is to go all over the map it’s a little tricky but that’s what the fun is.

Question –  just a follow up. Some people have said the process of TV is different than the process of film that’s why I ask.

D.L. – I’ll give you a good story on that one so when I first auditioned for anything ever it was a mini-series about “Common Ground” which was the Pulitzer prize winning book about the Boston Busing Crisis in the mid-seventies and so Meg Simon who cast the show with Warner Brothers discovered me in Boston, I was a theatre actor at the time. I was reading (the script) and I said I dunno I’ve done a bunch of plays and I hear stories, am I supposed to be smaller I hear the process is different and (Meg Simon) said “Just act the F’ing scene”. If you think that way you’re thinking the wrong way. Every medium is it’s own thing. I did a sit-com which originally wasn’t supposed to be in front of a live studio audience and when that changed I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. John Lithgow said “It’s a two act play in front of an audience, it’s fantastic” and I said OK so it is it’s own animal. By the way John Lithgow to me is the king, when you talk about bouncing between all the mediums. He’s an amazing guy, super super great guy.

Question –  What’s your take on this character? I mean he’s so complicated and so layered and you do a great job.

D.L. – Thanks. I think my take on that is the same as most people the difficulty I have is that he also seems to have carry a little bit of the burden of comedic relief. It’s about finding that balance of when it’s real serious when it’s dark and when it’s kind of goofy. I’ve done comedies in the past and your living fully in the sunshine of that side of the street and then I went to Sons of Anarchy, Vikings and Copper so you’re comfortable in that cause you know it’s dark. With this one it’s a little tricky to bounce back and forth almost arbitrarily so.

Question –  and do you see him as corrupt?

D.L. – I think a lot of people are corrupt. Over the course of your career luckily you get to meet people who work in law enforcement, you get to meet criminals, you get to meet people who work in the military and they say “you know it wasn’t cool but we had to do a deal with this war lord to get through this”. That’s the world. I’m sure a lot of young idealistic people have walked into places like Washington DC into a police department and said “Well I know what the culture is but I’m gonna change it”. It’s not that everybody is corrupt there’s gradations of it. There’s big T truths and small t truths. I think now when you catch him (Harvey) he just wants to get to the finish line. He may want to stash some money on the side, legally or not and wants to add to his pension and then Jim Gordon comes in and (Bullock) has seen fifty of these guys but none of them have been Jim Gordon. They’ve never had the moral fiber of this guy. Jim Gordon is such a strong character that it changes Harvey which reminds him of who he used to be I think.

Question – What’s the appeal of police shows for you such as Life? What’s the appeal for you as an actor or is it just a different role?

D.L. – I would say it’s just a different role, trying to stay as flexible as possible. I have respect for all roles and professions but there’s something so iconic (here). When I did the pilot for Gotham I was doing what I thought was a really thrilling run on Law and Order: S.V.U. which I loved a lot. There’s something so iconic about being able to play a New York Detective. There’s a million amazing stories happening every night, every day there’s stuff going on here (New York) and these guys get to beeline straight to the strangest, darkest part of the human condition and I think there’s something fascinating about it.

Gotham TV Podcast Question – Will we get to see the story behind why Crispus Allen is no longer partnered with Harvey Bullock?

D.L. – We haven’t gotten to it yet. But we get more back story on Montoya and Allen and the M.C.U. and what’s nice too is that the show is starting to breathe more into the worlds of Selina Kyle, Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth which I like. It was fun to have so much focus on Gordon and Bullock’s partnership. It’s such a big world that I think people will be excited to see it breathe and open up a little bit.

Question – Are you a fan of comic books?

D.L. – I wasn’t a huge fan growing up but since I started working in Blade in 1997 I got into comics. Partially just to understand the world I was representing and i have for the last twenty or so years.

San Diego Comic Con 2014…Six DC (and Gotham) events we can’t wait to catch

In preparation for San Diego Comic Con 2014 (SDCC 2014) Gotham seems to be making a mark in the city as it ramps up to the start next Wednesday (23rd July) when a preview night will kick-off four days (24th – 27th July) of all things comic related. Not only are the San Diego trolleys receiving a Gotham style makeover (Pictured Below), but there is also a Gotham-themed 130-foot zipline between the Convention Center and the Hilton Bayfront Hotel and Gotham City Police cars will cruise around town for Uber users and of course stake-out SDCC for the Penguin and Fish Mooney.

IMG_0851-Large 2

SDCC 2014 is the “big-one” of the comic conventions and it puts on a show (both inside and outside the convention center) for all those who are interested in comics from the big headline film and TV events through to guest appearances, comic artists and writers and there is of course the amazing cosplay and fun fringe events and socialising. We of course will bring you as much of the Gotham, Batman and DC news and stories as we can from SDCC 2014 next week, so for all the latest from SDCC 2014 watch this space and follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Google+. We will also be helping out our friends over at TheEffect.Net with all the other SDCC 2014 news and stories.

The schedule for SDCC 2014 has already been released and is packed with panels, talks, competitions, appearances, events and screenings. Amongst these are the TV, film and comic panels taking place over the four days that will include celebrating 25 years of the Simpson with co-creator Matt Groening, an exploration of Hannibal (the Menu will include David Slade – Executive Producer), the new Star Wars animation, Rebels, and a look at Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two and the new mid-season series Marvel’s Agent Carter. With this in mind we thought we would share our six big TV, film and comic events related to Gotham Batman and other DC properties scheduled for SDCC 2014.

1. Warner Bros Television and DC Entertainment event (8pm) and Warner Bros. Pictures Panel (10 am) – Saturday 26th July (8pm)

From 8pm on Saturday 26 July Warner Bros. TV with DC Entertainment will host a three hour extravaganza in Hall H to be hosted by Stephen Amell of the hit TV show Arrow. This is the big TV event of SDCC 2014, one that has never been tried before, and is exclusively a superhero themed event for fans of DC and will include loads of exclusives for the upcoming TV shows from Warner Bros and DC. Not only will the event feature appearances from cast and crew from Arrow, it will also showcase footage of the new upcoming TV series’ Gotham, The Flash and Constantine. The world premiere screening of the Gotham TV series pilot, starring Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith and Robin Lord Taylor will be shown at the event. To ramp up the excitement for the event a new teaser trailer has been released focusing on the relationship between Jim Gordon (Ben Mckenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) you can watch it here: “One Crime Will Unite Two Partners”.

To wrap things off at the Warner Bros. DC Entertainment event the complete screening of The Flash pilot will be shown along with exclusive footage of episode one of the new Constantine TV series, starring Matt Ryan, and exclusive footage of Arrow season three. We think this is going to be a very special event and panel indeed for Gotham and is certainly set to raise the roof on all the small screen heroes from DC that will be on offer this Autumn.

Gotham-Comic-Con-Banner

If you have any questions for the Arrow and The Flash panels you can use #AskArrow and #AskTheFlash for a chance to have them answered at SDCC 2014. Simply tweet the Arrow and The Flash CW Twitter accounts with your questions for Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin.

If you’re looking forward to Constantine, then earlier in the day at 5.15pm there will be the full pilot screening and Q&A session that will include stars from the show Matt Ryan and Harold Perrineau as well as executive producers and creators of the show Daniel Cerone (Dexter) and David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy). For all you fans of Constantine then at 4pm on 26th July head over to the Constantine Dome in Gaslamp Square, come in your finest cosplay for a “Constantine Meet Up” and commemorate the day with a group photo with the man himself, Constantine (Matt Ryan). This sounds a sweet little event just before the screening and Q&A session.

The Warner Bros. Pictures panel is also scheduled for Saturday 26th July at 10am in Hall H and they are bringing three upcoming films to SDCC 2014, including Mad Max: Fury Road and Jupiter Ascending, and Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies. Whilst there is no indication of any sneak peaks of footage from the 2016 Batman v Superman film or that the cast will attend, it is likely that the Batmobile will make an appearance.  DC is also planning to announce their future DC movie road map, with the tease that the Justice League cast will make an appearance.

2.Spotlight on Bill Finger, the Co-Creator of Batman – Thursday 24th July

The issue of who, when and why in the creation process of comics that meshes both writing, artwork as well as colouring and stenciling has provided some of the more controversial discussion topics around comics and graphic novels. None more so than the Batman’s uncredited co-creator – Bill Finger. Not only did Bill Finger breathe life into Batman, Robin, Gotham City, and one fantastic villain after another, he co-created bat-free icons such as Green Lantern. With 2014 being the 75th Anniversary of the Batman and the 100th anniversary since the birth of Bill Finger it is fitting that such a distinguished and high-level panel comes together at SDCC 2014 to discuss his huge influence and contribution to the DC universe. On the panel, moderated by Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight), will be amongst others Bill Finger’s only living descendants Athena Finger (The Cape Creator: A Tribute to Bill Finger) and her son Benjamin, plus Bob Kane’s biographer Tom Andrae (Batman and Me), writer Mark Evanier (Bill Finger Awards) and Michael Uslan (Batman, The Dark Knight film trilogy). What is great to see is that the very special reprinting of Detective Comics #27 by DC also includes new material and the first-ever cover credit to the co-creator Bill Finger.

3. Batman ’66 Panel – Thursday 24th July

Biff! Bam! Pow! …This panel should be a great trip down memory lane for a good number of people, bask in its sense of kitsch and let in your excitable inner child. With moderator Ralph Garman in Hall H Warner Bros. reunites pop icons Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar for a Bat-tastic look at Batman: The Complete TV Series. The actors behind Batman, Robin and Catwoman talk about their roles in the landmark series and provide an insight in to all the exclusive content within the forthcoming blockbuster home entertainment release of the much-loved TV series. The panel will also exhibit some of the holy dazzling HD remastered Batman footage of the series prior to its release in November 2014. Remember fans to bring your shades it’s gonna be bright and colourful.

4. iZombie Pilot Screening – Friday 25th July

From 11.30am on Friday we will get a glimpse of CW’s mid-season series iZombie as it debuts at SDCC 2014 (unfortunately iZombie will not be included in the Saturday WB/DC TV event). We can’t wait to get some more details of this show and hear the reaction to the pilot screening of iZombie. Olivia “Liv” Moore is a 25-year-old medical resident with high hopes of a long and successful life…until she’s turned into a zombie. Now not only is she stuck between half-alive and undead, but she is stuck in the morgue as the only way to satisfy her lust for brains. Liv’s new diet allows her to experience “visions”-flashes of the corpse’s memories-including, in some cases, clues as to how they were killed. The special video presentation will be followed by a Q&A with series stars Rose McIver (Once Upon a Time) and Malcolm Goodwin (Breakout Kings), as well as executive producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright (both of Veronica Mars).

5. DC Comics Batman- Friday 25th July

The DC comic Batman panel brings together some of the most creative writers, artists of the medium. “Cast and Characters” – Zero Year E02

Show Notes

Derek and John return for Zero Year, Episode 2. This time we have a much longer episode that focuses on all the details about the announced cast and characters so far and introduces for the first time the “News” section of the podcast .

News

We begin this week discussing some of the news that has come out since the last episode.

  • At the 2014 Winter Television Critics Association press tour the Chairman of Fox Entertainment has given his description of what we can expect from Gotham with an interesting take of “Gotham teetering on the Edge”.
  • Rocksteady have announced the forth and “Final” game in the Arkham series due out in 2014 on PS4, PC and XboxOne. This is the third game in the series created by Rocksteady and will see a significant upgrade from the previous incarnations. For the first time in this series you’ll be able to actually drive the Batmobile giving you the chance to “Be The Batman” even more than ever before. See the announcement trailer “Father to Son” here:
  • Grant Wilfley Casting has put out a call for extras for the Gotham TV show in New York. Confirming our theory on the filming location for the show. Following Marvels announcement that their four Netflix TV shows will also be filmed in New York we think this confirms New Yorks’ position as Superhero capital of America.
  • We also discuss some casting and news for two other DC properties. Since we recorded the podcast the first full image of The Flash’s costume was released this week and there’s lots of casting for the pilot of Constantine.
