  • the Dollmaker mentioned in Episode 2 of #Gotham will appear on the show. Colm Feore, who played King Laufey in Thor and also appeared in Amazing Spider-man 2 is making the leap over to DC to take the role. Dollmaker, real name Dr. Francis Dulmacher, has been teased since the second episode of Gotham, in which his creepy henchmen Doug (Frank Whaley) and Patti (Lili Taylor) name him as the culprit behind the mass kidnappings of the city’s street children. We wonder if John’s theory on the Dollmaker will come true.

Gotham News
⦁    Gotham has been officially renewed by Fox in the US for a second season. At the Television Critics Association (TCA) Winter event on Saturday 17th January Co-Chairman and CEO of Fox, Dana Walden, said that Fox “love the show” and they’ve told the team behind the hit show “keep doing what you’re doing”. This is great news.
⦁    Other great news revolves around RTE in Ireland who have officially confirmed that Gotham will premiere on RTÉ2 beginning Monday 26th January at 9pm. They’ve even released a brand new trailer. This should hopefully mean a wider audience is reached for the show in Ireland.

⦁    Robin Lord-Taylor fans have been asking one question regularly for months. What do previous actors who play the character think about his performance as the young Oswald Cobblepot on Gotham? Well the answer was given at the TCA’s this weekend when Danny DeVito (there to promote “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia“) was asked about his opinion about Robin Lord-Taylor. He told AccessHollywood.com “I’ve watched the show. I think he’s a very good young Penguin” ,”He’s a terrific actor,”. A ringing endorsement.
⦁    It’s also been announced that the future father of Dick Grayson, John Grayson will be played by Rob Gorrie. The circus will roll into Gotham in Episode 16 carrying with it the Flying Graysons. The episode is titled “The Blind Fortune Teller”. As Gotham takes place during the young years of Bruce Wayne, John Grayson will be a much younger character so we won’t see any appearance of Dick Grayson in the show.

⦁    Former Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy has dropped out of his second DC movie “Suicide Squad” due to scheduling conflicts. The current movie he’s filming, “The Revenant”, has run over so he’s unable to take on the role of Rick Flag in “Suicide Squad” which starts filming in April 2014.

Thanks for listening we’ll be covering Volume 2 of Hush in our next podcast as Gotham is still on hiatus in Ireland and the UK; returning to Channel 5 for the second half of season one in March.

Constantine Showrunners David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone Season 1 Interview

We attended a conference call recently with the show runners, David S. Goyer and Daniel Cerone, of the NBC & DC TV show Constantine. Four episodes into season 1 of Constantine the show is really finding it’s feet and just beginning to scratch the surface of the shows mythology. David and Daniel discussed in depth about the progression of the show, whether Liv (played by Lucy Griffith) can or will return in the future, working with Bear McCreary on the soundtrack, creating the show from a fans point of view but for a wider audience and tonnes of other information about Season One of Constantine check out the interview below.

Thanks to NBC we’ve seen both episode 4, “Feast of Friends” and episode 5 “Danse Vaudou” of Constantine which are well worth checking out. You can read our review of Episode 4 here  and here’s an interview with the shows writer to whet your appetite. Episode 5 of Constantine shows on NBC in the US this Friday the 21st of November at 10PM and will be released on Saturday on Amazon Prime in the UK.

Daniel Cerone also recommends that you should read some of Hellblazer so you can see how close they are sticking to the show. You can read it on Comixology here

Niagara Frontier Publications:

David, let me ask you. Obviously, you have no shortage of significant projects that you’re working on. What made this the right time and the right platform to be involved in telling the story?

David S. Goyer:

The genesis of the project is that I had a meeting with Warner Bros. Television. This is right after “Man of Steel” had come out and they asked if I would be interested in doing a television show based on a DC property. And so we just started having a general conversation about which one made most sense.

The first character I asked was about John Constantine. I’ve always been a huge fan. I was reading Swamp Thing when he was introduced. And, in fact, I have a letter printed in one of the early issues that he was introduced as a fan, I think when I was in high school or something like that. And there were some sort of legal things to sort out initially and then we start talking about other characters. But eventually Constantine became free and I was really excited.

And the reason for why this is the right time, I’ve done, obviously, in “The Dark Knight” film from Superman sort of kind of the (superhero thing). But one of the reasons why I like John Constantine is he didn’t have superpowers, he didn’t have a costume, and he always kind of (thumbed his nose) at those characters. So it was refreshing for me to tell a story about an anti-hero as opposed to a hero and he is someone who was really damaged and I just feel like he’s one of the great characters of  modern literature and, I don’t know, it was a different change of pace

CNN.com:

I’m really enjoying the show so far. So what can you tell us as far as how far are we going to go into the Constantine/Mythos early on? Are you going to introduce a lot of familiar stuff from the comics? Obviously, we’ve seen Papa Midnite. And are there going to be more things like that?

Daniel Cerone:

We’re digging as deeply into the Constantine/Mythos as we possibly can. I mean, in fact, it really is inspiring much of our storytelling. I mean, the episode that is airing this Friday, which we’re extremely excited about, “Feast of Friends” is the title. And that’s a story that’s literally ripped from the pages of “Hellblazer.” It is the first issue from the “Hellblazer” comics and it brings (in) Gary Lester, who is one of John’s friends from Newcastle. And it’s a fantastic story that translated so well to screen and I would urge anybody who’s listening to this to try to watch it before Friday (14th of November) and get people talking about it because it is – seriously, it’s our show at its pinnacle and it just set a bar of everything that we hope this show can be and can do.

But in a broader sense, look, over the course of the season, we’re breaking 17 right now, we have a fantastic ride ahead. Before the end of the season, you’re going to meet and get to know every one of John’s friends from Newcastle that were involved in the sort of faithful exorcism of Astra that, led to the eternal torment of John’s soul.

And so you’re going to meet them all. I mean, look, Papa Midnite, I think, we have now in four episodes. Jim Corrigan comes back for a couple more. I’m reading an outline right now for Episode, 16 that includes Terence Thirteen with…

David S. Goyer:

With Dr. Thirteen from,

Daniel Cerone:

We have Felix Faust. Yes. We have this incredible source material and we want to honor it and dig as deeply into it as we possibly can and at the same time, look, we’re a weekly network show and we have weekly stories and we’re trying to present the best of both worlds in terms of ongoing mythology with the Hellblazer and DC world but wrapped around weekly stories the viewers can hook into.

David S. Goyer:

And I would add one other thing, too, which is we read the responses to various episodes. And I think we have three episodes so far and some people – I know that people seemed to really like the last episode that introduced Papa Midnite but some people said “Okay, so now we know what the formula is going to be week after week and we still haven’t heard much more about “The Rising Darkness” or Newcastle ” Well, you’re about to with the fourth episode.

And we think that’s the right time to do it, we’re not a fully serialized show. We’re kind of a hybrid between standalone and serialize. And we’re going to start introducing more back story elements every few episodes or so.

KSiteTV :

I was actually curious. Are we going to be getting any more episodes that might focus on Chas and his backstory at some point?

Chas_Cab_Driver_Electrocuted_Constantine_s1e1_GeeklyPress

David S. Goyer:

Yes.

Daniel Cerone:

Yes. Chas is an interesting character because, when David and I developed the show and sat down to figure out what characters do we want in a continuing basis. On one hand, Chas was a natural because he’s sort of the most constant companion and long living companion. Maybe the only living companion of John Constantine’s. He’s like the muscle and he’s the cab driver and John didn’t drive a lot. I don’t think he drives at all in the comic book.

And so we want to include Chas and he is definitely the strong, silent type, very laconic kind of character we wanted to roll out slowly.

I know there’s been a couple of issues where they dig in his back story but there’s not a lot there. So we’ve really enjoyed Chas. We’ve really enjoyed opening him up. We will open him up deeper, Episode 10. You know, we came up with this idea, this notion because Chas is…

Craig Byrne:

Don’t reveal it.

Daniel Cerone:

<Laughing> I’m not going to no spoilers, promise. But…

David S. Goyer:

Right.

Daniel Cerone:

…let’s put it this way. In the pilot episode, you see that Chas comes back to life. For some reason, people started translating that to the idea that he’s immortal. We promise you he is not immortal.

David S. Goyer:

He’s not immortal.

Daniel Cerone:

There’s a very good reason that he’s coming back to life and the only spoiler I will give is that those lives are not eternal. And we do have an episode that involves flashbacks where we basically tell that story and we get to know more about Chas, we meet Renee and his daughter, Renee’s wife, ex-wife as they’re separated right now and his daughter and we kind of dig into that story and figure out what makes Chas tick.

David S. Goyer:

And I would add to that that I – I think when the first 13 episodes are done people will be surprised at how much background we filled in on various characters and even in terms of the relationship with John and Manny and Zed’s back story and it’s not just case of the week.

Showbiz Junkies

In the first episode I really liked Lucy’s character Liv. I was really into her. How difficult of a decision was it for you guys to not carry on with her story and is there a possibility that she’ll ever pop up again?

David S. Goyer:

You know, honestly, it really wasn’t that difficult. I mean, it became apparent to us and, look, we’re glad you like her. I think she (Lucy Griffiths) did a fantastic job. But I think that the character was flawed in its conception. And obviously we’re to blame for that. She was the only major character in the pilot that wasn’t from the comic books and sometimes you make these concessions when you’re trying to get a show off and running and one of the benefits of doing a pilot is you’ve got this initial downtime after the pilot before you’re filming again in which you can think about retooling some aspects. And once we saw the character in action and we started breaking Episodes 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, we felt like we were just running into a lot of dead ends. And that’s when we decided to go back to the source material and talking about the character Zed and I will say I feel like that the vast majority of the audience seems to have felt that the Zed character was a better match for John and seems to have supported our decision.

Daniel Cerone:

Yes, in terms of whether she’ll be back, look, she’s part of the foundation of the show. I mean the mill house in which John is crashing and full of all kinds of magical antiquities and that’s her father’s place. So listen, as we dig deeper into the season, as we start talking about possible arcs for next season, there’s – I would say there’s an opening there. Whether it’s an opening we’ll step through or not, it would have to be organic, it would have to feel right and not feel like a device. But if there’s an organic reason to bring her back into the story, we’d love to.

Constantine - Season Pilot

MingleMediaTV.com:

How does the fan base help you develop the storylines you want to produce?

David S. Goyer:

Well, I mean, it’s interesting. I’ve adapted quite a few comic book properties now. And it’s a – it’s tricky because I think you have to be really attentive to the fan base.

What we talk about is – but at the same time – I mean, I’m poorly quoting Steve Jobs here. You can’t give the market what they say they want. You want to give them something that they haven’t even thought of. If you give them exactly what they want, they become disappointed by the same token.

The way that we’ve always tried to measure it is that we’ve tried to dip in with the fans and be aware of what are the issues that are most important to them, what are the core concepts that are most important, with the characters that are the most important. But we are also cognisent of the fact that if the show is going to flourish and broaden its audience, we need to be able to respond to an audience greater than just the core comic book fans. And so it needs to work for both audiences.

Daniel Cerone:

I know I speak for David in this, too. I mean, one of the nicest things this is that David and I came at this as fans of the (character).

David S. Goyer:

Yes.

Daniel Cerone:

I mean, that’s really the bottom line, like, we were – we fell in love…

David S. Goyer:

We weren’t new to the character.

Daniel Cerone:

Not at all. We fell in love with all the things about John Constantine that the fans did. And – or at least based on what I’ve read of the fans. But look we needed that smartass, wisecracking, gallows humor, scruffy blonde-haired, trench coat-wearing, cigarette-smoking breath with a fatalistic attitude and this deeply humanist point of view for reasons that he doesn’t even understand. I mean, we like that character. That was someone that just appealed to us. So we’re going to be true to that no matter what.

And then when you start – and we wanted to stay true to the world and the characters. And then you take that foundation and you have to figure out, “Okay, how can we pour that into a show that can last and sustain itself on a weekly basis” and NBC had certain desires for the show. They wanted stories that were told every week. So as David mentioned before, this is a bit of a hybrid. I mean, for us, it was “Okay, how do we figure out how to both, as fans, tell the story we want to tell about the evolution of this character and his relationships as well as some closed-end stories to broaden out the fan base?” So yes. I mean, we came into it as fans.

David S. Goyer:

And I’ll give you – to build on what Daniel said, because we were fans of the character, when we first met with NBC, we said “Look we know that the Keanu movie is out there and he wasn’t British and he didn’t have blonde hair” and I think that that movie had a lot of great attributes but because we had fallen in love with the John Constantine as depicted in the comic books, it was our mission to try to bring to life the character that accurately reflected the character we had fallen in love with as possible. So when NBC says “Well, does he have to be British? Does he have to wear skinny tie in a trench coat? Does he have to be blonde? Does he have to smoke?” we said “Yes.” And they said “Why?” And we said “Because that’s the character we fell in love with.”

constantine

Daniel Cerone:

And I’ll say there every step of the way, they did ask those questions, too, like, they were very open and accepting and loving and they wanted to embrace the fans, too, but at a certain point, like when it came to casting, Matt Ryan does not have blonde hair. And initially, they’re like “Do we really need to lighten his hair” and we’re like “Yes we do.” They got the first draft of the script and they saw sort of all of the kind of British euphemisms and colloquialisms written into his dialog and they’re like “That might be off-putting. Does he really need to be British?” And we…

David S. Goyer:

We said “Yes.”

Daniel Cerone:

…he does. So at every step of the way, we fought for that. And to their credit, they were very open and they understood our passion and I believe the fans’ passion for the character.

David S. Goyer:

But to put a bow on it, how does the fans how does the hopes and desires back burn to it, it’s important because we were fans of the character and have been fans of the character for decades ourselves. So we were really determined to try to bring to life a version of Constantine that was accurate.

TVLine:

I was struck by this, especially in the first episode, but as it had gone on as well, how scary Constantine is as a drama. And I was wondering if there’s anything NBC had asked you to tone down or change in what you showed so far.

David S. Goyer:

Not really.

Daniel Cerone:

Yes. I got the same. And they – it’s funny, Kimberly, because they pushed us not so much anymore now that we kind of understand – and, look I was a show runner the first two seasons of “Dexter.” David has done a ton of feature films where pretty much anything goes.

But we’ve also done network shows over years and we’ve kind of self-censored ourselves in the beginning. And at every step of the way from the network be it in the outline phase of the scripts or the cuts that the network were seeing they’re like “Go further,” like “Push it further” like they – I don’t – I’m not sure what changed the network landscape.

David S. Goyer:

Yes, I don’t know if I could think of any instance in which they said “Tone it down.”

Daniel Cerone:

Yes, there wasn’t one. They have pushed us to go bigger. They have pushed us to go darker. They pushed us to go scarier. There’s constantly – if I had a broader note down to one, it would be “Just make this as big and scary as possible,” like, that’s what they want to see. So it’s been really framed for us. I mean, look, we have to do what we do with them but budgetary limitations and capabilities. But no, they have not censored us at all.

Mnemoth Police man

ohsogray.com:

So for Constantine kind of along the lines of what you’ve been discussing a little bit, he’s not like Arrow, he’s not like The Flash, he’s kind of a different kind of hero/anti-hero. So how does that factor into your writing and the portrayal of this character in order to still make people want to root for him? How do you make your anti-hero the hero?

David S. Goyer:

First of all, I would say, I mean, there are heroes and there are anti-heroes. And they’re both a lot of fun to write. But in some ways, anti-heroes are more fun to write for because they’re not bound by the same moral code that the heroes are.

And in some ways, anti-heroes are more human because most of us have variables. Most of us are imperfect. And he’s doing what he’s doing for fundamentally noble reasons but he doesn’t really have a code of conduct.

I do think that audiences also like anti-heroes. I mean, if you look at House, if you look at Luthor, if you look at Sherlock, I would categorize these characters more properly anti-heroes than heroes. They can be fun and different and they’re not aspirational. People don’t want to be them, people want to be Superman. I don’t think people want to be Constantine because he’s kind of a miserable sod. But he’s also fun. And it’s fun to it’s irreverence and it’s just a different way to go.

Daniel Cerone:

A lot of characters that are out there are doing what they do because it’s their job or because I have a badge or because I have a calling. As David said Constantine is doing the right thing but he’s doing it for totally humanist reasons It’s one of those fascinating aspects of the character to me is if you ask him why he’s out there helping humanity, I’m not even sure he can tell you.

David S. Goyer:

Yes.

Daniel Cerone:

You know, is he doing it because he wants to save lives? Is he doing it because, frankly, chasing demons is a bit of a fix for him and he’s just (jonesing) for the next kill? Is he doing it, as he said early in his career, for the women and to get laid? Is he doing it to because it’s kind of self-empowerment? You know, it’s just never really clear.

And what’s great about him is I don’t even think he’s clear. But yet, he keeps doing it and he keeps fighting this fight. And yes, as David said, one of the funest things is that there’s no code of conduct that he operates by. He’s doing the good things that all the cops and lawyers and whatever kind of other heroes are out there doing. But there’s no checks and balances for him. And that’s where he often gets into trouble.

And that – I think when you ask what makes him relatable, I think that’s it because he’s his own he has a self-sense to himself and he frequently goes over the line and he frequently makes bad calls and the fact that Constantine, anyone who gets close to Constantine dies. I mean, that has proven itself true for years in the comic books. Very early in our series, you’re going to see that, too, where he makes the hard calls and he loses friends over it, sometimes literally.

And so that’s kind of his curse and it makes him, hopefully – hopefully, that’s what makes him – it’s easy to vote for him.

David S. Goyer:

I would also add that I think that these things are cyclical and I think that they come in waves and maybe it’s a common – a broader commentary on where we are in society right now. But the television landscape right now is it’s flourishing with the really flawed characters.

And for whatever reason, audiences are responding and fascinated by these flawed characters. I think if you look at the television landscape now, it used to be that there were a lot of – the black hats were the black hats and white hats were the white hats and it was very clear who is who but there are a lot of shades of grey right now and that seems to be kind of what’s happening with the right guise in terms of the role.

Hellblazer vs New 52 ConstantineFanboy Nation:

I was interested in finding out how much of the Pre-52 influenced the series as well as the Post-52 and how difficult is it to ride that line of horror and suspense without crossing over to get the censors on your case?

David S. Goyer:

I would say as the sort of the resident comic book nerd, I would say that the show is almost exclusively influenced by the Pre-52, the Hellblazer comics. If for no other reason then Hellblazer ran for 300 issues and the new Constantine is – I know it’s less than 20. I’m not quite sure where they’re at now, 15, 16. They’re just not the body of work that exists in terms of what we’re influenced by.

So without question, and I know this is really inside baseball, but the show is primarily influenced by and inspired by the Pre-52…

Daniel Cerone:

Yes. If I can jump in on that part, David is completely right. We have the whole sort of Constantine cannon at our disposal in terms of storytelling. We do look to the newer issues to see if there’s interesting story ideas for us or stories that we can use or adopt.

But, look, the Web described what we’re doing on the show as Constantine is this amazing mythology. And there’s this amazing character and it’s just like this fantastic car that we’ve been given the keys to, to take it for a spin and we’re doing that on network television. And the writers of the new 52 Constantine, they’re doing the same thing as we are. They’re basically rebooting the franchise. We’re rebooting for television. They’re doing it for sort of a new generation of comic book readers.

So we’re kind of charged with the same task in terms of taking what was there, the foundation of what was there and just try to honor it and do the best that we can with it for our medium.

So yes, it’s all as cool. I mean one of the most fascinating things about Constantine to me is that it was the longest-running comic book series. According to my understanding of any imprint of any comic book publisher in its 30-year run, it was never rebooted, it was never renumbered, it was never reissued. It just stayed in continuous publication as a guy who can – who aged on the page in real-time. And I just think that makes him such a unique character.

And what we’re doing on our show is we’re going back to beginning. We’re basically meeting roughly the same time that you met him in Hellblazer in the very first issue. So our timeline when people are like “Wow,” you know, in terms of the cancer story and all the great arcs that he has we just hope and pray that this show has legs because we’ll get to him like we love those arcs, dangerous habits and all the arcs that everybody else is excited about, we’re excited about. And what’s great is that we’re choosing an entry point where the character is young and all those adventures are ahead of him and we hope to dramatize as many of them as we possibly can.

Fanboy Nation:

How difficult is it to ride that line of horror and suspense without crossing over to get the censors on your case?

Daniel Cerone:

If you read the network’s standards that we get, it’s like “Can we please not hear him urinating? It’s okay to urinate on screen but as long as we don’t hear it.” Or there’s a shot where Zed is like painting this young guy and he’s nude – like a nude model and it’s like “He can be nude but can we see him from the sides so we don’t see his butt crack because it’s like – it’s okay he’s nude but we just – we can’t see the crack.” So it’s – those are the kind of – those are the censorships…

David S. Goyer:

It’s not too bad. Yes.

Daniel Cerone:

No, it’s not at all. It’s not at all.

TV Megasite:

I was wondering since there are other shows where someone hunting demons like “Grimm” and “Supernatural,” is there anything that you do to make sure that you’re not inadvertently copying them or do you have someone watching for that kind of thing or just do your own thing and hope for the best?

David S. Goyer:

Well, first of all, let me just say that, taking nothing away from those shows, I think what’s fundamentally different about our show versus like “Oh, well, just show people the Supernatural” is the John Constantine character. He’s an amazing character.

And with all due respect to those shows, he was around a lot longer – a lot earlier than they were. And I know there’s, some people have said “Oh, this is the character on Supernatural” that character was influenced by Constantine, not the other way around. And he’s been around for 25, 30 years.

So I think once people see a few more episodes under their belt, particularly the episode that’s going to air Friday night (A Feast of Friends), It’s a very, very, very different show than those shows. And I also think there’s room for all of that.

Daniel Cerone:

I will say this, though, as a storyteller, you can’t pay attention to what other people are doing on similar shows. I think that’s where you get into trouble, frankly, because if it’s in your head, “Oh, they did this creature” or “They did this scare” or “They did this sort of legend or mythology.”

You know, then you start comparing yourself and, look, we’re just trying to channel the character John Constantine as clearly as we can. I mean, funny, one of the first shows that I came in on as a young writer was “Charmed” and I spent, like, the first four years of my career on “Charmed.” You know, we’re doing this on “Charmed” before they’re doing it on “Supernatural.” “Supernatural,” you know, “X-Files” is doing it before us. “Buffy” was in the middle of it all. You know, all you can do is trust your characters. That’s, hopefully, what people are tuned in to every week and, within that framework, we try and tailor it, we might do a vampire story or a zombie story. In fact there’s elements of a zombie coming up for us but filtered through the world of Papa Midnite. So it’s voodoo zombie. It’s more old school, raising and bringing, recently-deceased humans back. It’s not the sort of zombie – apocalyptic zombie virus that we’re all accustomed to.

So, we’re always going to spin it through our filter but you can’t worry about what other people are doing and really tell good stories.

Constantine

Three If By Space.net:

I love Constantine. I’ve been really enjoying it. But I was not familiar with it. I had never heard of it before the show. So obviously…

Daniel Cerone:

Great.

Three If By Space.net:

…I’m not, one of your comic book fans…

Daniel Cerone:

That’s good, though.

Three If By Space.net:

You know, looking at The Devils You Know section of the Web site and that kind of thing, what are you doing to really help the non-comic book fans, how could they best get into the show because you’ve got to have – and you talked about this a little bit before, you’ve got to have that contingent in order to make this show a success on the network.

David S. Goyer:

Sure. Sure.

Daniel Cerone:

Yes. Look, I actually think in the whole wide spectrum. I actually feel like we’re tipping closer to creating the show for the non-fan than the fan, truthfully, because there isn’t a single episode or story we tell where we’re just not seeing down to tell a cohesive story and every week introduce a danger and characters that you can relate to and care for and, at the same time, we’re trying to spin out this, the central character of John Constantine as someone who is full of aches and pain and guilt and torment and is going about doing something because he feels personally compelled to do it.

I feel like everything we’ve served and talked about this phone call is, it is a little inside baseball. I mean, for anybody who knows of this, you don’t have to know of the character Papa Midnite. You don’t have to know about The Newcastle Crew. You don’t have to know about Felix Faust or the Doctor Fate Helmet or any of these elements that we’re using to enjoy the show. I mean, every week, we’re just trying to tell the most sort of honest and accessible and humanistic stories that we possibly can.

But there’s an added layer on top of that for the comic book fan where if you know the world, if you know John Constantine, if you know Hellblazer, if you know some of the iconic images and people on the DC world, it’s value added. It’ll provide that much more entertainment and fun hopefully.

David S. Goyer:

And I would say one more thing let’s talk about, for instance, the introduction of Jim Corrigan, who’s a character the comic book fans will know. You know, the working rule of thumb that we’ve gone by is, as fans, it’s exciting for us to introduce a character like that and we know it will be to the comic book fans but he becomes another DC character called The Spectre a supernatural figure ultimately. But the point is it’s fun for us as fans to say “Hey, let’s get this character in there.” But we don’t want to do it just as a stunt casting and we won’t do it unless it’s organic to the story and we can introduce the character in a way that people who never read the comics will understand who he is and won’t be lost without his backstory.

So we have to make sure that every time we introduce a character or a plot element like that, we can do it in a way that stays true to the source material but doesn’t alienate the broader audience and they feel like they’re missing out or they don’t understand the story because they haven’t read the comic books.

Daniel Cerone:

And, Jim Corrigan is a great case study. I mean, if I can sort of present for an instant how the Jim Corrigan character came into being on our show, for Episode 5 it’s called “Danse Vaudou.” It airs on Friday the 21st of November. We did an episode where we’re like “alright, let’s start it with urban legends”. let’s serve a thematic urban legend episode.

And we basically decided to do three of them. One was like the vanishing hitchhiker. One was the slit-mouthed woman. That’s like the woman who carries a surgical mask in Japan. And the third was it’s the golden paw. What is it? The monkey’s paw basically…

David S. Goyer:

Yes, yes.

Daniel Cerone:

Somebody’s loved one comes back.

So we decided to have three ghost stories and all based loosely on those urban legends. And they all end up being ghosts that are brought to life by Papa Midnite unknowingly because of The Rising Darkness. So within the context of the episode, we realized we needed a cop character. There is a cop that, was coming across various dead bodies that were connected to his ghost. And so we’re like, “All right, we’re going to expose a police officer to the supernatural world here.” And so right away we’re like “All right, is there anyone in the DC world that we can plug into that could, sort of” – again, it’s a value added. Kill two birds with one stone and we thought “Well, Jim Corrigan is this cop, very much like Constantine, kind of takes the law in his own hands, really hard charged, will do anything, for the arrest and he ultimately is killed and comes back as The Spectre character.” We’re like “What if we meet him now as a cop. He can come into this case. He can see those” – you know, we’re sort of seeing like a bit of the origin story of Jim Corrigan where he sees the supernatural world open to him for the first time.

And so, A, we’re introducing Jim Corrigan; B, we’re giving John Constantine a friend of the force for future episodes, and that’s just sort of how that happened. But it came from very organic story, different place. It wasn’t about servicing DC fans. It was literally about just trying to tell a good story.

Derek O’Neill of Gotham TV Podcast:

Another one of the characters for the show really for me so far is the music. Can you have talk about working with Bear McCreary about the inclusion of the Sex Pistols and the Punk music so far?

David S. Goyer:

I’ll start. I mean, Bear – this is the third time I’ve collaborated with Bear. Most recently, he does the score for my other show, “Da Vinci’s Demons.” He actually won the Emmy last year for it.

And so as soon as Constantine, the pilot was going, I think I just said to everyone Bear is doing it. There’s not going to be a conversation. He’s doing it.

Bear is also a huge, huge Hellblazer fan. And one of the things that’s great about Bear is he’s incredibly versatile. I mean, his score for “Walking Dead” is nothing like his score for this. There’s nothing like a score for “Battlestar (Galactica)” nothing like “Da Vinci’s Demons.”

We also used, which is unusual, a full orchestra on the show. A lot of people just go with synths and might have one or two instruments. We have a full orchestra.

And if you want to handle the Punk thing, Daniel, it’s sort of part and parcel. That speaks to a character when John Constantine was introduced in the 80’s he was part of that Punk scene. He used to be part of a Punk band, which we referenced in the last episode and we thought even though it’s bit anachronistic, it would be fun to still utilize a lot of that Punk music whenever we’re using, source pieces.

Daniel Cerone:

But, look, here’s the deal. I mean, John Constantine was Punk. I mean, it’s as simple as that. I mean, he’s – you know, it just so that ecstatic just so embody his, that of rebellious ecstatic, free-thinking completely embodies who John Constantine is and, look, I have a 15-year-old daughter who just – that’s all she listens to is Punk. So, I mean, I don’t even think it’s throwback really. I think it’s just, it’s such a part of sort of culturally now, the music scene and there’s so many shoots off it. So to bring that into the show as a flavor just felt like a really honest thing to do.

Like David said when John left home in the comics in his timeline, I think he went straight into the London’s underground Punk scene and yes, that’s all long gone but that doesn’t mean that, as a character, that can’t be a music and that can’t be his musical style because it just feels honest to who he is. And for us, it’s a lot of fun to try to find cuts that we can use for the show.

Episode 5 of Constantine shows on NBC in the US this Friday the 21st of November at 10PM and will be released on Saturday on Amazon Prime in the UK.

Netflix Nabs Rights To New Drama ‘Gotham’ In Precedent-Setting Deal

Television Critics Association declares Gotham the year’s “most promising” new show

Gotham TV Podcast Exclusive: In the Interview Room with Gotham’s Victoria Cartagena and Andrew Stewart-Jones

EXCLUSIVE: There are many fascinating pairings set for Gotham, from Jim Gordon and Harvey Bullock to Fish Mooney and Oswald Cobblepot, and Gotham TV Podcast got the opportunity to interrogate the Detective partnership of Renee Montoya (Victoria Cartagena) and Crispus Allen (Andrew Stewart-Jones) about the TV show, their characters, the role of the Montoya / Allen partnership and the influence of the comic series Gotham Central on the show. We get to hear that their off-screen friendship is as strong as their on-screen partnership, we find out Victoria Cartagena’s favourite arc of the comic series Gotham Central and we uncover some details about Detective Allen’s past.

In the build up to the release of the Gotham premiere on Fox in the USA (22nd September) and Channel 5 in the UK, our look at the comic series Gotham Central shows the importance of this detective partnership to the Major Crimes Unit (M.C.U.) of the Gotham City Police Department and we can’t wait to see this great Detective alliance brought to the screen. You can read the interview below but there’s nothing better than hearing them in person. Check out the full interview where they answer all of our questions.

Gotham TV Podcast: What drew you to audition for a role in the upcoming batman prequel series Gotham? Did you have much exposure to previous incarnations of this universe such as the movies, comics or TV shows?

Victoria Cartagena (Renee Montoya): When I got the call for the audition there was no script there were only dummy sides [scenes unconnected to the TV show Gotham], however, I was aware that it had something to do with Batman’s Gotham and, because I’d been a fan all my life, I certainly wanted a chance to be part of the show. Because i grew up watching the Batman re-runs with Adam West and seeing all the Batman films from the 80s, 90s all the way up to the Nolan films, I’ve seen them all in the theatre so I was definitely familiar and excited to even audition for it.

Andrew Stewart-Jones (Crispus Allen): Honestly, the audition was one of a bunch on Valentine’s Day this year. I was just trying to get through the day. At the time, I had no idea what I might be getting involved in.  Also the role was a possible recurring so although that is wonderful, I was already auditioning for series regulars roles so this wasn’t high on the list. I should add that the folks behind Gotham were very secretive. I had no idea exactly what I was reading for.

GTVP: You’ve been cast in the roles of Renee Montoya and Crispus Allen, detectives in the Gotham City Police Department (G.C.P.D.). What qualities of the character of Montoya and Allen drew you to their characters?

Cartagena: I love that she’s passionate and fiercely loyal and I’m really drawn to what a bad-ass she is. Cause she certainly has a swagger, that I don’t, so that’s fun to play. She works with some really tough guys but she can hang with the best of them. And as an actor I appreciate that she’s flawed. She’s strong and intelligent but at the same time she’s quick to anger and it sometimes clouds her judgment. So she’s tough but vulnerable too and that’s always interesting to play.

Stewart-Jones: Without a doubt, his moral compass would always be his outstanding quality. In a world so dark and corrupt, Allen has his eye on the right way to do things. I love that.

GTVP: This is the first screen outing for Renee Montoya. She is known in the comics to have a complex and interesting back story in both her professional and private life. Will we see any of these complexities play out in the TV series?

Cartagena: So I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future but in the episodes we have shot you will DEFINITELY get a glimpse into the complex relationships, for sure (laughs).

GTVP: This is also the first screen outing for Allen. He is known in the comics to be fiercely loyal to his friends but doesn’t suffer fools lightly.  Will we see any of these strong character traits play out in the TV series?

Stewart-Jones: Rob Brown played a G.C.P.D. officer by the name of Allen in The Dark Knight Rises. Just FYI.  But yes, this is Crispus Allen’s big debut as such.  You’ve basically described me, Andrew, to a tee… so yes.

Jim Brown V4 Dark Knight Rises

GTVP to Victoria Cartagena: Another important person in Renee’s life is Detective Crispus Allen, your partner in the G.C.P.D. Given they have such a close relationship how has it been creating and developing that bond with Andrew Stewart Jones?

Cartagena: I absolutely could not have asked for a better screen partner. From the first day we walked on to set we had this immediate connection and he’s become a really great friend and I think that our bond keeps strengthening the more that we work together and its certainly transferred onto the screen. He’s just an amazing actor, a very generous actor and a lot of fun to be around. So I’m really just grateful to be able to be his partner.

GTVP to Andrew Stweart-Jones: Detective Allen is very protective of Renee Montoya, his partner in the G.C.P.D., and is known in the comics to have her back in many tough situations both in the field and in the office. Are you enjoying creating this partnership with Victoria Cartagena as Renee Montoya?

Stewart-Jones: Working with Victoria is an absolute honor and a treat. She is incredible. Very giving, funny and gullible. So susceptible to all of my shenanigans – which I LOVE!  The on-screen relationship, I believe, will benefit from the instant connection we had as professionals.

GTVP to Victoria Cartagena: We’ve been covering the comic series Gotham Central in the lead up to the show and have particularly been enjoying the interplay between your character and Crispus Allen. We know that you’ve been reading the series too. Are there any standout moments that you read and would like to see transferred to the TV series?

Cartagena: I really love the story arc for Renee in Half a Life [issues 5 – 9] she went through a lot of highs and lows. So I really hope it makes it onto the show because what stood out to me was how strong the bond is between Montoya and Allen. During those really tough times (Crispus) Allen was the only one that really went to bat for her and he had her back without question. You could just see how fiercely loyal they are to one another. So they’re more than partners, they’re friends or…more like family actually. I hope that the audience get to see that bond and it was important for me to read that on paper to make sure we were getting the job done.

GTVP to Andrew Steward-Jones: We’ve been covering the comic series Gotham Central in the lead up to the show and have particularly been enjoying the interplay between your character and Renee Montoya. We know a number of the cast have been given Gotham Central to prepare for their roles. Were you given any reading material to guide your preparation of your character and to what extent do you balance this with the bringing new ideas to the role?

Stewart-Jones: I wasn’t asked to read anything but I’m a bit of a comic nut. I didn’t want to just lift the character off the comic book pages and present him on people’s screens. I wanted him to be human. Accessible. But, at the same time, I am committed to always having the comic as the foundation upon which I build.

GTVP to Victoria Cartagena: Gotham has many different characters on the path to greater destinies, Jim Gordon eventually becomes the Commissioner of the G.C.P.D., the young Bruce Wayne will in adulthood become the Batman and Oswald Cobblepot is taking his first steps on the road to leading the criminal underworld, which of these narratives most excites you?

Cartagena: I’ve had the privilege to do at least one scene with all of these actors so I’m just looking forward to what each one of them brings to the story because they are so talented and they bring their own unique and original take on the portrayal so it’s just going to be thrilling to watch. (My answer is) all of them.

GTVP to Andrew Stewart-Jones: Gotham has some other interesting characters on the payroll of the G.C.P.D., there is the mystery of Edward Nygma, the intensity of Jim Gordon’s moral code, the political aspirations of Captain Sarah Essen and the old school style of Harvey Bullock. How does this mix of characters affect the dynamic in the G.C.P.D. and which of these characters interest you the most?

Stewart-Jones: The beauty, mystery and sheer fun of Gotham is the mufti-faceted dynamics of the relationships. It’s never ending. Always escalating. It’s fascinating to witness. I was Harvey’s partner before Gordon and so there is tension. A wound or two. Deep history. I’m closest to him. I won’t say if that’s good or bad.

GTVP: The fan reaction is building for this show in a big way, are you excited for the New York premiere of Gotham in September where you and your fellow cast members get to experience the fan reaction to the pilot first hand?

Victoria: For sure, I’m definitely excited. We’ve been working on this for months, it feels like a really long time and we really can’t wait to share it with the public and I really hope to hear back from the fans and I hope they enjoy it and I think that they will. So, Yes, can’t come soon enough. Just a few more weeks.

Stewart-Jones: When the word for my level of excitement is invented, I will happily use it ad nauseam. Until then we can use the longest word from Mary Poppins. It’s PGA rated, which helps.

GTVP: Finally, if Gotham TV Podcast were to be questioned in the suspect interview room at the G.C.P.D., which of the Montoya-Allen partnership would play the “Good Cop” and who would play the “Bad Cop”?

Victoria: This is my favourite question. So…you guys are so great that I think that there would be no need either of us to play the bad cop. But, on the off chance that one of you broke the law or you just had something that we need like some information then I’m pretty sure that Montoya would be the one to ride you until you spill the beans because she is a dog with a bone that one.Yeah I’d put my money on Montoya.

Stewart-Jones: If you ever end up being questioned by us, that information will not help you in the slightest and you will be wishing and praying to wake up from your bad dream! Gotham TV Podcast… do not cross Allen and Montoya! Oh, and thank you for this. I’ll be listening in. Enjoy the premiere.

Gotham News

  • In the build up to the premiere of Gotham a front page feature was published in SciFi Now magazine and Gotham is also featured in the SFX magazine. Both publications provide a lot of information that we have heard over recent months but also include some new bits of information. In particular, we hear from Bruno Heller that with the casting of David Mazouz as the young Bruce Wayne the role became a more central to the story of the TV series. It was also hinted that Gotham will also explore other vigilantes that may have existed before the Batman and which could have served as an inspiration and possible role model for the young Bruce Wayne.
  • Another European broadcaster Canal Plus in Spain have announced that they will broadcast Gotham within one day of the US broadcast on the 23rd of September. While we know the show will air on Channel 5 in the UK we’ve yet to get a release date, but hopefully it won’t be far behind the 22nd September air date in North America on Fox in the USA and CTV in Canada.
  • iTunes now allow you to subscribe to the full season of Gotham on their US and Canadian service. For US €29.99 or CAN €49.99 you get the full season of 16 episodes and a special exclusive behind the scenes video. “Gotham Central Review Part 4” – Zero Year E13

“Gotham Central Review Part 4” – Zero Year E13

Show Notes

In Zero Year, Episode 13 of Gotham TV Podcast we talk about all the news surrounding Gotham and DC connected universe, in particular, this week the confirmed UK release of Gotham on Channel 5 this Autumn. We also continue our Gotham Central series review looking at issues #23-27 and including the story arcs “Corrigan”, “Lights Out” and “On The Freak Beat” by Ed Brubaker, Greg Rucka and Michael Lark.

The review is full of spoilers so if you haven’t read the comics, grab a copy from your local comic book shop or you can read it digitally at Comixology and join us. Let us know your opinion on the story and we’ll discuss any feedback on the next episode.

Gotham News

⦁    The big news this week is that we finally have a confirmed UK broadcaster for Gotham. Channel 5 a UK channel will be broadcasting the show in the UK. The penetration of the channel is quite low in Ireland but luckily we can at least see it. In Irish broadcast news there’s a vague confirmation that our national broadcaster RTÉ has picked up Gotham and will broadcast it on RTÉ 2. *UPDATE 16/10/2014 – The Irish Independent are reporting that RTÉ 2 have the rights for Gotham and will be showing the TV show from 2015 for those who don’t have access to Channel 5.
⦁    Casting news in this weekend from Gotham is that David Zayas who played Detective Angelo “Angel” Batista throughout the hugely successful TV show Dexter will be swapping to the other side of the law to play Salvatore “The Boss” Maroni. Along with Carmine Falconé and Oswald Cobblepot, Sal is another of the big mobsters of Gotham. Previously he was played by Eric Roberts in Christopher Nolan’s Batman: The Dark Knight and played a very big part in the creation of Two Face in the seminal graphic novel Batman: The Long Halloween.

Other DC News

⦁    DC have planted flags in the sand for movies all the way up to 2020. This provides a little confirmation of the story we reported early from Nikki Finke of the supposedly leaked DC Movie slate but no actual films have been reported in the slots.
⦁    While we still haven’t got confirmation of who’s playing Aquaman, Jason Mamoa, who played Kal Drogo on season 1 of Game of Thrones, has been very strongly rumoured. Pretty interesting casting but another interesting story came out this week about DC commissioning two different writers to write two scripts for an Aquaman movie. So apparently there will be some kind of Aquaman battle Royale to decide which script is the king of the ocean.
⦁    A new Batman comic, Gotham by Midnight, is due to be released in October/November 2014 focusing on the even darker corners of Gotham City and its police force, the GCPD. Written by Ray Fawkes the current writer of “Batman Eternal” and featuring the artwork of “30 Days of Night”  and “Welcome to Hoxford” artist Ben Templesmith. Writer Fawkes says this series is a mix of horror and supernatural and will be largely devoid of the Caped Crusader. Jim Corrigan will also feature in the issues.
⦁    The upcoming Constantine TV Show is starting to stake their claim on some of the wider DC universe characters and confirmed that C.S.U. Officer Jim Corrigan of the Gotham City Police Department will play a big part in the first season of the TV Show. Very interesting and the progress of this story might provide an answer to whether characters from these shows will cross over. If they can work Corrigan into a cross over story with Gotham at some point it opens the door to network agnostic crossovers…. We talk a lot more about Corrigan in this weeks Gotham Central Review.

As always thanks so much for listening and all your interactions over the last five months. We have just over a month left until Gotham launches in the US hopefully it won’t be very long after until we get to see the show in Europe and keep up with the coverage.

Next time we’ll complete our Gotham Central coverage with the final set of issues #28-40, which encompass the collected set “Corrigan II”.

San Diego Comic Con Day 2 Roundup

While we wait for the big day of Comic Con to begin here’s a recap of all the DC Connected Universe news from Day 2 of San Diego Comic Con.

Arrow Season 3 Panel and Trailer

The Comic Con panel featured a plethera of guests from the show including Stephen Amell, David Ramsey, John Barrowman, Willa Holland, Paul Blackthorne, Colton Haynes and executive producers Marc Guggenheim, Andrew Kriesberg and Greg Berlanti. Stephen Amell discusses the promise he made to the fans that “they’d all work hard to ensure the show doesn’t suck” to which an audience member responded “Mission accomplished”.  Willa Holland chats about the transformation of her character Thea from Season One’s spoiled little rich girl to her kick ass turn at the end of Season Two. John Barrowman discusses his character Malcolm Merlyn’s return to the show. The set up for Season 3 was decided upon before writing began for Season 2. This season will be all about “At what price is victory?” Kriesberg also compared the casting of Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/The Atom to the introduction of fan favourite Faith in season 3 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, saying it’s a game changer.

Arrow Panel Image

Andrew Kriesberg also confirmed that Flash Episode 8 and Arrow Episode 8 will feature the first two hour cross over on the TV shows but there will be another cross over earlier in the series when Felicity pops over to visit the Flash in Central City for episode 4.

Watch the trailer for Season 3 below including a big spoiler for our favourite geeky computer hacker…

iZombie panel discuss the premise of the show

CW’s mid-season series iZombie also debuted at SDCC 2014 (unfortunately iZombie will not be included in the Saturday WB/DC TV event), with details from executive producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright (both of Veronica Mars) on the premise of the show that sees Olivia “Liv” Moore (Rose McIver) turn into a zombie. Her Zombie status is not known to everyone and she only eats the brains (with hot sauce) of people who are already dead. To satisfy her lust for brains she gets a job at the city morgue where she can dine on the brains of those people admitted. Liv’s new diet allows her to experience “visions” of the corpse’s memories and clues as to how they were killed. This take on zombies from the Vertigo imprint will be lighter in tone and looks set to draw out the funnier and comedic moments of zombies over the series whilst set against other procedural elements from the morgue.

Spotlight on Scott Snyder

2529601-scottsnyder_564

Given his current work on Batman: The New52! series, Scott Snyder writer of Batman Zero Year, Superman Unchained and American Vampire (and the upcoming title Wytches for Image Comics) is an important figure right now for DC and for the Batman universe. In this panel Scott Snyder provides a great insight in to his work and the craft of comic writing. The “Spotlight” panel explores topics such as why he chose the Riddler as the principal villain for “Batman: Zero Year” and what it was like and how prepared he was to write Batman after landing the job with DC. Scott Snyder also talks about his experiences pitching his writing, such as American Vampire, to publishers and the upcoming projects Wytches and Batman: Endgame. The panel transcript can be found in full via Newsarama.

Spotlight on Bill Finger

Bill Finger

Featuring members of Bill Finger’s family this panel dealt with the legacy left behind by Bill’s contribution to the creation of Gotham city and The Bat-Man in 1959. It’s unlikely the Dark Knight we know and love today would have existed without Mr. Finger’s contribution, so it was great to see his name highlighted on this weeks free reprint of Detective Comics #27. You can read a recap of the panel via comicsbeat.com

Gotham Zip-Lining, Trams and Taxis disguised as G.C.P.D. cars.

Opened by Kevin Faulconer, the Mayor of San Diego, the Gotham Zip-Line allows fans to glide past a backdrop of Gotham City. Looks like great fun there’s a video of the Gotham Zip-line below. There are also Gotham Trams operating on the route to the convention center and if you want to use a taxi to get around and order through the Uber app you can get picked up by a Gotham City Police Department car.

New Ben Affleck Batman image

At the DC entertainment both they had created a rather large surprise for fans in the Batman 75 montage wall. In amongst a vast number of images of batman throughout the years they had included a head shot of Ben Affleck in the cowl from the upcoming movie Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice.  He looks a little like most of the attendees at comic con will look after a weekend of camping out for Hall H but still very cool.

With three more days of fun in San Diego, including panels for Gotham, Arrow, Flash, Constantine and Warner Bros. Pictures we’ll have loads more to discuss and share. We’ll do a full recap at the end of SDCC 2014 on our podcast.

San Diego Comic Con 2014…Six DC (and Gotham) events we can’t wait to catch

In preparation for San Diego Comic Con 2014 (SDCC 2014) Gotham seems to be making a mark in the city as it ramps up to the start next Wednesday (23rd July) when a preview night will kick-off four days (24th – 27th July) of all things comic related. Not only are the San Diego trolleys receiving a Gotham style makeover (Pictured Below), but there is also a Gotham-themed 130-foot zipline between the Convention Center and the Hilton Bayfront Hotel and Gotham City Police cars will cruise around town for Uber users and of course stake-out SDCC for the Penguin and Fish Mooney.

IMG_0851-Large 2

SDCC 2014 is the “big-one” of the comic conventions and it puts on a show (both inside and outside the convention center) for all those who are interested in comics from the big headline film and TV events through to guest appearances, comic artists and writers and there is of course the amazing cosplay and fun fringe events and socialising. We of course will bring you as much of the Gotham, Batman and DC news and stories as we can from SDCC 2014 next week, so for all the latest from SDCC 2014 watch this space and follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Google+. We will also be helping out our friends over at TheEffect.Net with all the other SDCC 2014 news and stories.

The schedule for SDCC 2014 has already been released and is packed with panels, talks, competitions, appearances, events and screenings. Amongst these are the TV, film and comic panels taking place over the four days that will include celebrating 25 years of the Simpson with co-creator Matt Groening, an exploration of Hannibal (the Menu will include David Slade – Executive Producer), the new Star Wars animation, Rebels, and a look at Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season two and the new mid-season series Marvel’s Agent Carter. With this in mind we thought we would share our six big TV, film and comic events related to Gotham Batman and other DC properties scheduled for SDCC 2014.

1. Warner Bros Television and DC Entertainment event (8pm) and Warner Bros. Pictures Panel (10 am) – Saturday 26th July (8pm)

From 8pm on Saturday 26 July Warner Bros. TV with DC Entertainment will host a three hour extravaganza in Hall H to be hosted by Stephen Amell of the hit TV show Arrow. This is the big TV event of SDCC 2014, one that has never been tried before, and is exclusively a superhero themed event for fans of DC and will include loads of exclusives for the upcoming TV shows from Warner Bros and DC. Not only will the event feature appearances from cast and crew from Arrow, it will also showcase footage of the new upcoming TV series’ Gotham, The Flash and Constantine. The world premiere screening of the Gotham TV series pilot, starring Ben McKenzie, Donal Logue, Jada Pinkett Smith and Robin Lord Taylor will be shown at the event. To ramp up the excitement for the event a new teaser trailer has been released focusing on the relationship between Jim Gordon (Ben Mckenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) you can watch it here: “One Crime Will Unite Two Partners”.

To wrap things off at the Warner Bros. DC Entertainment event the complete screening of The Flash pilot will be shown along with exclusive footage of episode one of the new Constantine TV series, starring Matt Ryan, and exclusive footage of Arrow season three. We think this is going to be a very special event and panel indeed for Gotham and is certainly set to raise the roof on all the small screen heroes from DC that will be on offer this Autumn.

If you have any questions for the Arrow and The Flash panels you can use #AskArrow and #AskTheFlash for a chance to have them answered at SDCC 2014. Simply tweet the Arrow and The Flash CW Twitter accounts with your questions for Stephen Amell and Grant Gustin.

If you’re looking forward to Constantine, then earlier in the day at 5.15pm there will be the full pilot screening and Q&A session that will include stars from the show Matt Ryan and Harold Perrineau as well as executive producers and creators of the show Daniel Cerone (Dexter) and David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight trilogy). For all you fans of Constantine then at 4pm on 26th July head over to the Constantine Dome in Gaslamp Square, come in your finest cosplay for a “Constantine Meet Up” and commemorate the day with a group photo with the man himself, Constantine (Matt Ryan). This sounds a sweet little event just before the screening and Q&A session.

The Warner Bros. Pictures panel is also scheduled for Saturday 26th July at 10am in Hall H and they are bringing three upcoming films to SDCC 2014, including Mad Max: Fury Road and Jupiter Ascending, and Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies. Whilst there is no indication of any sneak peaks of footage from the 2016 Batman v Superman film or that the cast will attend, it is likely that the Batmobile will make an appearance.  DC is also planning to announce their future DC movie road map, with the tease that the Justice League cast will make an appearance.

2.Spotlight on Bill Finger, the Co-Creator of Batman – Thursday 24th July

The issue of who, when and why in the creation process of comics that meshes both writing, artwork as well as colouring and stenciling has provided some of the more controversial discussion topics around comics and graphic novels. None more so than the Batman’s uncredited co-creator – Bill Finger. Not only did Bill Finger breathe life into Batman, Robin, Gotham City, and one fantastic villain after another, he co-created bat-free icons such as Green Lantern. With 2014 being the 75th Anniversary of the Batman and the 100th anniversary since the birth of Bill Finger it is fitting that such a distinguished and high-level panel comes together at SDCC 2014 to discuss his huge influence and contribution to the DC universe. On the panel, moderated by Dr. Travis Langley (Batman and Psychology: A Dark and Stormy Knight), will be amongst others Bill Finger’s only living descendants Athena Finger (The Cape Creator: A Tribute to Bill Finger) and her son Benjamin, plus Bob Kane’s biographer Tom Andrae (Batman and Me), writer Mark Evanier (Bill Finger Awards) and Michael Uslan (Batman, The Dark Knight film trilogy). What is great to see is that the very special reprinting of Detective Comics #27 by DC also includes new material and the first-ever cover credit to the co-creator Bill Finger.

3. Batman ’66 Panel – Thursday 24th July

Biff! Bam! Pow! …This panel should be a great trip down memory lane for a good number of people, bask in its sense of kitsch and let in your excitable inner child. With moderator Ralph Garman in Hall H Warner Bros. reunites pop icons Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar for a Bat-tastic look at Batman: The Complete TV Series. The actors behind Batman, Robin and Catwoman talk about their roles in the landmark series and provide an insight in to all the exclusive content within the forthcoming blockbuster home entertainment release of the much-loved TV series. The panel will also exhibit some of the holy dazzling HD remastered Batman footage of the series prior to its release in November 2014. Remember fans to bring your shades it’s gonna be bright and colourful.

4. iZombie Pilot Screening – Friday 25th July

From 11.30am on Friday we will get a glimpse of CW’s mid-season series iZombie as it debuts at SDCC 2014 (unfortunately iZombie will not be included in the Saturday WB/DC TV event). We can’t wait to get some more details of this show and hear the reaction to the pilot screening of iZombie. Olivia “Liv” Moore is a 25-year-old medical resident with high hopes of a long and successful life…until she’s turned into a zombie. Now not only is she stuck between half-alive and undead, but she is stuck in the morgue as the only way to satisfy her lust for brains. Liv’s new diet allows her to experience “visions”-flashes of the corpse’s memories-including, in some cases, clues as to how they were killed. The special video presentation will be followed by a Q&A with series stars Rose McIver (Once Upon a Time) and Malcolm Goodwin (Breakout Kings), as well as executive producers Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero-Wright (both of Veronica Mars).

5. DC Comics Batman- Friday 25th July

The DC comic Batman panel brings together some of the most creative writers, artists of the medium. With storylines that are deep, complex, sometime vicious and brutal but always compelling and with artwork that lifts from the page to feed your imagination the Bat-family of comics couldn’t be in better hands during Batman’s 75th anniversary. This panel will provide an exclusive look and insight at what is to come for the Batman and his allies from the amazing talent behind those comic pages that we’re enjoying so much. The panel includes Marc Andreyko (Batwoman), Brian Buccellato (Detective Comics), Greg Capullo (Batman), Pat Gleason (Batman and Robin), Greg Pak (Batman/Superman, Doctor Strange:Season One), Scott Snyder (Batman, Batman Eternal), Peter Tomasi (Batman and Robin) and others. Enjoy this panel it should be epic!

 6. DC Collectibles – Thursday 24th July

For all those kleptomaniacs out there (such as ourselves) rejoice as DC Collectibles showcase the action figures, busts, statues and much more for all the fans of DC. The panel, which includes amongst others Kevin Kiniry (DVP for Creative Services), artist Greg Capullo (Batman) and sculptor Jon Matthews, will let you in to the creative process of making these figures and statues and they will give some insight about what is coming up from the DC Collectibles range. Get your wallets ready and prepare to spend as DC Collectibles offer loads of Comic-Con Exclusives to be sold at Diamond retailer booths during the convention.

We are looking forward to all the events next week at SDCC 2014 from the big to the small and whilst Warner Bros. Pictures DC cinematic events are limited this year at SDCC 2014, DC will be more than catered for by the Warner Bros TV event with a look at the exciting new Autumn DC releases on the small screen. But, in the best tradition of SDCC, we hope there will also be plenty of big surprises and unexpected guests to come at San Diego Comic Con 2014 next week. We hope you’ll join us.

Show Notes

Derek and John return for Zero Year, Episode 10 of Gotham TV Podcast, with a review of the “Unresolved” story arc in the comic series “Gotham Central” by Ed Brubaker, Greg Rucka and Michael Lark and covers issues #19-22. The review is full of spoilers so if you haven’t read the comics, grab a copy from your local comic book shop or you can read it digitally at Comixology and join us. Let us know your opinion on the story and we’ll discuss any feedback on the next episode.

We are beyond excited by this news and can’t wait until the broadcasters and other premiere dates will be announced for other regions…fingers crossed this will be very soon!

⦁    In Gotham casting news, Carol Kane was cast as Gertrud Kapelput, the mother of Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), in a recurring role for Gotham. Kyle Massey has also been hired in a recurring role. Massey will play a neglected kid called Macky who lives on the streets of Gotham.

Gotham Trailers, Clips and Videos

Since the start of May fans of the upcoming TV series Gotham have, in addition to interviews with the cast and characters, been treated to a host of video releases, including trailers and clips that are beginning to tease out the tone, direction and characters of the show scheduled for this Autumn.

The release of the official extended trailer for Gotham started it all off in early May and started a buzz about the show with fans enjoying and scrutinising the trailers, including ourselves with our “Gotham First Full Trailer Breakdown” episode of Gotham TV Podcast. This was soon followed by a “First Look” from the official Gotham website and trailers from other TV networks as screenings of the pilot episode of Gotham began to gather more excitement and generate momentum around the show. We then got to see a short but tantalising villains snap-shot from Fox Networks which was awesome and got ourselves even more excited about the show and now we’ve seen the companion video to Villains entitled Heroes, there’s no new footage present but seeing Jim and the young Bruce Wayne together as the city closes around them is worth watching.

Whilst most of the footage is from the pilot episode, there are some great shots of the City of Gotham and some iconic glimpses laid bare in the current releases for the Gotham TV show. We are certainly expecting new footage from the series soon, as the big comic cons are on the horizon and filming for the show is continuing apace in New York (aka Gotham). So, Gothamites, we have pulled together the current trailers, clips, snap-shots and other videos below and on our new YouTube Channel for you all to enjoy. We will of course add to this as more trailers and clips are released.

New Constantine Trailer teases Doctor Fate

In Constantine TV news a second trailer has been released this week, check it out below. Whilst much of the footage is from the first official trailer there are a few additional little snippets to whet the appetite and increase the excitement for this series. We do learn that you should never go demon hunting on an empty stomach! But more notable is the glimpse and tease of the helmet of Nabu.

The helmet of Nabu is a powerful mystical talisman (along with the amulet and mantle of Nabu) bequeathed to Kent Nelson, who later becomes the great DC comics sorcerer Doctor Fate. Alternatively, the helmet, along with the other talismans, could be entrusted to Hector Hall, Inza Cramer Nelson or Jared Stevens who have also gone on to become Doctor Fate throughout the character’s history.

This is also not the first time Doctor Fate has appeared on the small screen in a DC TV property. The great sorcerer also showed up as Kent Nelson/Doctor Fate (Brent Stait) as part of the Justice Society of America (JSA) in season nine of Smallville “Absolute Justice” (episode eleven).

1215826-doctor_fate_iii__3

The tease of the helmet of Nabu in this second trailer is exciting as it hints at the integration of other characters from the wider DC universe in to the Constantine series. This is a great development for the show as it may suggest some epic mysteries and story arcs. We hope that Doctor Fate will be a season regular to the Constantine series, but Doctor Fate may simply be in a guest star role to drive elements of the story. Or maybe the helmet is simply a plot point or passing reference and all we will see is the helmet of Nabu. In any case this new addition for the TV show has ramped up our interest in the possibilities of the upcoming Constantine series this Autumn.

The presence of Doctor Fate’s helmet in the trailer also got us wondering which other potential DC characters could make an appearance in the Constantine TV series and we came around to Doctor Occult as a possibility. Despite being an old character in the DC canon (his first appearance was in 1935 in New Fun Comics #6) he is part of the “Trenchcoat Brigade” and has worked alongside John Constantine before. We think that this would be a nice little nod to other mystical members of the DC universe in the same way that Doctor Fate would be. Let us know your thoughts on any DC characters you would like to see in the Constantine TV series.

fall-tv-shows-6-constantine-1095433-TwoByOne

Finally, given the developments with the Doctor Strange phase 3 movie project at Marvel, with the appointment of a Director Scott Derrickson; does this tease of Doctor Fate in the Constantine TV series represent a challenge to Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme Doctor Strange? Or is Doctor Fate simply a good fit with the Constantine TV show and its mystical and occult themes? We would love to hear your thoughts.

Maybe the Constantine and Doctor Strange mash-up that I (John) wanted in Episode 7 of Gotham TV Podcast is no longer required? But I can always console myself with the awesome Ron Marz and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez Doctor StrangeFate from the DC/Marvel cross-over Amalgam Comic series.

Gotham Central Review

The full comic series “Gotham Central” looks at the Gotham City Police Department and the difficulties and challenges faced by its detectives at work and on the streets fighting crime in Gotham City. The shadow of the Batman and his foes hang heavy over the officers of the Major Crimes Unit.

In this fifth podcast we review issues 11-18 of the Gotham Central series that include the story arcs “Daydreams and Believers” (issue #11), “Soft Targets” (issues #12-15) and “Life is Full of Disappointments” (issues #16-18). From the hiring of a temp in the Major Crimes Unit to the beginnings of a new case the series charts the relationships of the detectives in the G.C.P.D. and the events that impact on them. With a well-known villain on the loose in Gotham the detectives are truly on the front line of the war on crime. The review is full of spoilers so if you haven’t read the comics, grab a copy from your local comic book shop or you can read it digitally at Comixology and join us. Let us know your opinion on the stories of these arcs or your thoughts of the 40 issue comic series so far. We’ll discuss any feedback on the next episode.

As always thanks for listening. Next time we will be taking a brief break from the review of Gotham Central comic series and will be talking about the first of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy “Batman Begins”. Get watching and we’ll talk to you in two weeks.
