We watched the Batman 75 panel at WonderCon earlier this year and it was really interesting with lots of thoughts and ideas about Batman past, present and future as well as personal views of the Dark Knight and what he means to them and also more widely to modern culture. We think this panel will also be well worth checking out.

Gotham Central Review

The full comic series “Gotham Central” looks at the Gotham City Police Department and the difficulties and challenges faced by its detectives at work and on the streets fighting crime in Gotham City. The shadow of the Batman and his foes hang heavy over the officers of the Major Crimes Unit.

In this fifth podcast we review issues 11-18 of the Gotham Central series that include the story arcs “Daydreams and Believers” (issue #11), “Soft Targets” (issues #12-15) and “Life is Full of Disappointments” (issues #16-18). From the hiring of a temp in the Major Crimes Unit to the beginnings of a new case the series charts the relationships of the detectives in the G.C.P.D. and the events that impact on them. With a well-known villain on the loose in Gotham the detectives are truly on the front line of the war on crime. The review is full of spoilers so if you haven’t read the comics, grab a copy from your local comic book shop or you can read it digitally at Comixology and join us. Let us know your opinion on the stories of these arcs or your thoughts of the 40 issue comic series so far. We’ll discuss any feedback on the next episode.

As always thanks for listening. Next time we will be taking a brief break from the review of Gotham Central comic series and will be talking about the first of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy “Batman Begins”. Get watching and we’ll talk to you in two weeks.

“Batman: Strange Days” – Bruce Timm’s Batman 75 Tribute

Bruce Timm, the maker of the much beloved “Batman: The Animated Series” and the animated features “Batman: Mask of the Phantasm” and “Batman: Return of the Joker”, has released his animated short “Strange Days” created for Batman’s 75th anniversary. The 3 minute animated short is available to view here.

“Strange Days” sees the Batman (voiced by Kevin Conroy) take on an old nemesis, Hugo Strange, and his “creation” to rescue the dame. At WonderCon Bruce Timm said when introducing the short that “I always wanted to do a straight-up period piece version of Batman set right in 1939, the year Batman was created.”

The entire short feels like the start of an old black-and-white horror film in its tone, much like the Frankenstein movies. Even the music is evocative of this 1930’s era in which Batman took his first steps to fighting crime in Gotham City.

Bruce Timm also said at WonderCon that “Strange Days is an itch that I’ve had for years that I finally got to scratch.” We are really glad he did as this is a lovely atmospheric piece of animation in tribute to The Bat.

Darwyn Cooke’s Batman 75 Tribute

Hot on the heels of Bruce Timm’s Batman animated short “Strange Days” which we discussed in our most recent podcast. Darwyn Cooke (Batman Beyond Animated, Before Watchmen: Minutemen #1-6 Writer and artist.) has released his short tribute to #Batman75. Simply titled “Darwyn Cooke’s Batman Beyond it is available to watch on Yahoo movies now.

The 1 minute clip shows Terry McGinnis and our elder Bruce Wayne of Batman Beyond teaming up against a very recognisable foe. There are some great nods to the many versions of Batman that have existed in animated and live action form over his 75 year history. It really made us want to watch a new animated series. Cory Michael Smith Cast as Edward Nygma

“I am an actor who can transform the film with the final cut. Who am I?”

Gotham has its Nygma, its Edward Nygma!

Cory Michael Smith has been confirmed to play Edward Nygma (aka the Riddler) in the Fox TV series Gotham. We are looking forward to what types of riddles, puzzles, rhymes, conundrums and brainteasers he may unleash on the city of Gotham and hope he becomes a season or series regular on the TV show.

On-set Pictures of Montoya and Crispus Allen

Update 12/05/2014:

Renee Montoya (Victoria Cartagena) and Cripus Allen (Andrew Stewart-Jones) have been confirmed as series regulars for Gotham Season 1. This decision brings the show even closer to Gotham Central which, if you’ve been following our review podcasts, makes us both really happy.

Original Story 02/04/2014:

New on-set images of Ben McKenzie as Jim Gordon during filming in Manhattan are captured.

With Jim Gordon are fellow Gotham P.D. detectives Renee Montoya and Crispus Allen, played by Victoria Cartagena and Andrew Stewart-Jones. Both  Montoya and Allen feature in the Ed Brubacker and Greg Rucka comic series “Gotham Central” that recently showed up on a tweet by Ben Mckenzie. The first 10 issues of “Gotham Central” will be reviewed in our next podcast in two weeks time.

In these shots, on the steps of what appears to be G.C.P.D. headquarters with all the uniformed police in the shots, it seems like Montoya and Jim are squaring up to one another until finally Allen steps in to calm the situation. What is the heated exchange about? Are accusations flying? Why does Crispus Allen step in? We can’t wait to find out!

News

It was a big week this week with the release of the officIal photos for the majority of the main cast of characters of the Gotham TV show. We discuss our impressions of the look of the actors and what we think this means for the show. We also discuss some connected news from the wider DC universe.

As DC move the release date of the untitled Superman – Batman to the same day as Captain America 3 – May 6th 2016 – the cast of Captain America: The Winter Soldier ignite a brand new Marvel Vs DC fight. You can watch the interview here.

The majority of the episode is given over to our review of the animated movie Batman Year One.

Starring Ben McKenzie as Bruce Wayne and Brian Cranston as Jim Gordon, this animated film brings to life the seminal 1986 Frank Miller graphic novel. As we discover why Jim Gordon comes to the Gotham City Police Department and how Bruce Wayne takes his first steps to clean up Gotham. Both protagonists meet the corruption in Gotham head-on leading ultimately to the emergence of the partnership between Jim Gordan and the Batman.

The review is full of spoilers so if you haven’t read the graphic novel or watched the movie, grab a copy from your local comic book shop or you can read it digitally at Comixology and join us.

Let us know your opinion on the story, graphic novel or movie and we’ll discuss any feedback on the next episode.

New On-Set Images of the Wayne Family and Selina

The young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) and is parents have finally been revealed in some new on-set images, via hitflix.com and starburstmagazine.com.

What we can say from the photos is that David Mazouz looks like he is having a blast, he can be seem smiling from ear-to-ear with his on-screen parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne (played by Grayson McCouch and Brette Taylor), and the future Catwoman (Camren Bicondova). Why wouldn’t he have a grin on his face, he’s the future Batman! Some of the other images captured during filming show the tragic beginning of the young Bruce Wayne’s emotional journey that leads ultimately to the creation of the Dark Knight.

gothamwaynes- cropped gotham-set-pics-wayne-parents-death bruce-selina-gotham-c99ba_home_top_story_1

We were also treated to some new action shots of the young Selina Kyle sliding down a fire escape. Is she trying to escape from someone or is she rushing to get somewhere? We think the answer has something to do with the carton of cream tucked away in her jacket, as it appears it is feeding time for the local alley cat or cats. These are such a great collection of images and really cements the young Selina Kyle to her future persona – Catwoman.

catwoman-gotham1-c20f0 catwoman-gotham2-b761d Camren Bicondova who plays Selina Kyle was pictured on her Catwoman costume on the set of the 'Gotham' Tv series in Downtown, Manhattan, New York City Camren Bicondova who plays Selina Kyle was pictured on her Catwoman costume on the set of the 'Gotham' Tv series in Downtown, Manhattan, New York City

The tone of the show is looking very stylised and brooding, with its mix of prohibition era costumes and present day setting. We can’t wait to see the more of the cast, especially Fish Mooney and maybe some unannounced villains.

Arkham Knight – The Villains

Gotham fans, Batman fans we are being indulged…not that we’re complaining…

From the shadows of Gotham a few of Batman’s villains were teased out by RockSteady in the awesome trailer for Arkham Knight. These images gave a hint of the villainy and scum that Batman will need to face in RockSteady’s forthcoming game this Autumn.

On the back of the trailer some very atmospheric and exciting pictures have been released of three of Batman’s dark acquaintances, via Gameinformer.com – The Riddler (Edward Nygma), The Penguin (Oswald Cobblepot) and Two-Face (Harvey Dent).

riddler0314-610 - Cropped

twoface0314-610 - cropped

penguin0314-610 - cropped

Of course we’re interested to see how all of these characters play-out in the game. But we are really intrigued to see how the portrayal of Oswald Cobblepot compares with the new, younger character exploration by Robin Lord Taylor in the the TV series Gotham. Also, the ever present Riddler from the other games (Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, Arkham Origins) finally looks set to get a full in-game story. We really want to see what they do with this great Batman adversary.

Watch this space as we are expecting to see further rogues, like Harley Quinn and The Scarecrow, who will feature in Arkham Knight.

What are your thoughts on these new pictures? Let us know and share your thoughts below.
