About Gotham

“Gotham”

The Fox Network TV series

9th March 2014, Dublin, Ireland

To date only hints and flavours have been released about the TV show Gotham, though there is enough to bring intrigue and get the excitement building. Below is a summary of the Gotham TV show so far…

Gotham is a new TV series schedule for Autumn 2014. The show is set in the City of Gotham and based around the beloved characters of Gotham City created by Bob Kane and developed by Bill Finger, but without the Batman!

The TV show is set to follow the origin of the young rookie detective Jim Gordon in the Gotham City P.D., before the appearance of the Batman, examining Jim Gordon’s exploits in the G.C.P.D and his rise to prominence. The young rookie detective will be teamed up with Detective Harvey Bullock, his older more world weary and grizzled police partner.  The new team are not only answerable to their superior officer, Captain Essen, but must deal with the dangerous internal politics and powers within the police department as well as investigate and survive the criminal streets of Gotham. After all this Jim Gordon must try to forget the job and to pick up his private life, in particular to love and care for his fiancee, the future Mrs Gordon, Barbara Kean.

Gotham will also include Bruce Wayne, who as a young boy will be thrust in to an emotional journey following the murder of his parents. This exploration of a younger Bruce Wayne, who has seen his parents killed, will be central to how he comes to terms and deals with the tragedy. How these responses set him on a path to the Dark Knight will be interesting to watch. In all of this Bruce will be helped by a younger Alfred Pennyworth. With an ex-military past and a host of lethal skills Alfred takes up the void left by the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne to become Bruce’s loyal protector and guardian.

Another person that is likely to be introduced to the younger Bruce Wayne’s world is a young Selina Kyle. As an orphan she immediately has a point of connection to the young Bruce, how this possible interaction will play out should be interesting since they are of two separate worlds in Gotham city – privilege and poverty. Coming from the wrong side of the tracks, Selina is described as a suspicious and unpredictable teenager but skilled as a street thief and pickpocket. Who will be this modern artful dodger’s connection to the criminal world of Gotham or will she go it alone on those tough streets?

Into this mix come the villains of Gotham. The sadistic and twisted origin stories of the villains, that have made Gotham infamous, corrupt and down-right dangerous, will also be looked at and developed in the show. At the top of this criminal food chain is the gangster and mob boss Fish Mooney, a shady lady, who is described as ruthless and vicious, with a knack of knowing people better than they know themselves. This imposing crime boss runs Gotham’s underworld, with her second-in-command Butch Gilzean, using her nightclub as a front. The lower level of the criminal structure in Gotham is populated by the low-life psychopath-for-hire Oswald Cobblepot. Whilst not yet the Penguin, this next generation crime boss has a lust and determination to move up the food chain. What do penguins eat?

Some major cast announcements have already been made to flesh out the characters of Gotham, that include Ben McKenzie as the young Jim Gordon, Jada Pinkett-Smith as a new crime boss Fish Mooney and David Mazouz as the young Bruce Wayne. These casting choices are outlined further in the Casting Case Files.
